"Bacon Explosion!!! As American as Apple Pie" by capnsurly , from our Flickr pool

Independence Day in Seattle was a cloudy affair. Several people commented to us that they weren't even going to bother with the fireworks, because it was too overcast for the display to be worthwhile. Just before sundown, though, the sky moved off. We turned the corner along the Burke on our way to Gasworks Park, and there was the city, across the water, in all its reflective glory. Buildings casting shadows against one another, and a breathtaking sunset shone from their windows.

That's a lotta boats.

BOMBS BURSTING, ETC: Happy Independence Day! Grill up some zucchini, down a beer or three, and enjoy your day off. Ivars is doing their exploding chemicals thing after sunset, so if you're into that, sedate your dogs/chickens/goldfish and enjoy the 23 minute show over Elliott Bay. Or wherever: check here and here for your options.

Great food, excellent beer and wine pours, delicious jazz, music, games, and sunset at Pier 66. What more would you want for a summer night?

MUSIC: For the nine millionth time, get your ass to Easy Street to see Aqueduct's all-ages in-store performance.

Blogging duties can really get on top of traditional reporter and columnist types. Their days are already packed with making phone calls, dicking around on the internet, occasionally driving somewhere, occasionally tapping out a story; how the hell are they supposed to find time to write on the internet on top of all that? Everyone just wants to talk on the internet anyway - No one's listening on the web. The public demands you start a blog for months and you resist. Finally the word comes down from the top, "You're blogging now," and no one reads the damn thing. You know what, screw this.

Being a Seattle sports fan on Sunday afternoons used to mean a forced trip to Ikea. We mean, what was the other option, catching the Seahawks on TV? Even as the Seahawks slowly improved the past few years, they were no fun to watch, as they blew games and went on late season losing streaks. It was enough to make us want to smash our brand new Flurkten (which we put together ourselves, thank you very much).

Now that Independence Day weekend has come and gone, Seattlest has gotten all that nasty "freedom" and "liberty" and "love for one's country" out of our system---so it's back to cynicism as usual. With that in mind, it's the perfect time to hit up Elliott Bay Book Company for the reading/signing tonight by politically-minded cartoonist Ward Sutton. Ward lived in Seattle from '91 to '95, when he illustrated posters for local bands (of the grunge variety, no doubt). He's back in town this evening promoting his new book o' comics entitled Sutton Impact: The Political Cartoons of Ward Sutton. This is his first-ever collection, culled from his weekly strip in the Village Voice, as well as works created for the New York Times, The Nation, Mother Jones, The New Republic, TV Guide, and other hippie commie pinko rags. In fact, his book features the following warning:

The Attorney General has found that reading Sutton Impact may be hazardous to your unquestioning devotion to the Bush administration, the Religious Right, and the Media Industrial Complex.
