How Hot is it in Seattle?

ARTSBLOG sent us this picture he shot of a few of the 280 people in line to buy air conditioners at the North Seattle Home Depot. "The guy up front said they started lining up this morning, said a truck of various air conditioners just pulled up. He said there was no way there were enough air conditioners on the truck for even a third of the people in line. The guy said they’ve been telling people this all day but nobody is leaving the line and they keep lining up," reports Art. "Man, nobody was talking and you could cut the tension with a knife. They were just sending people out with air conditioners that they were taking off the truck and they were sending them out through the lawn and garden department so there wouldn't be trouble." Dishin': Tacos at the El Camion Taco Truck

Taco truck! El Camion is conveniently parked in front of the Home Depot on Aurora Ave, and we knew that a couple of cheap tacos could tide us over. And when we order two tacos, you should know by now that likely means one tongue and one tripe. (Unless we go for crazy for cabeza—the beef cheeks.) Quick wait at the window, place the order, sit at one of the umbrella-ed tables, pick up upon being called, add salsas (they have a good variety) and some radishes and jalapenos to the plate, and then back to the table to squeeze some lime and enjoy the al fresco dining. Close your eyes, and you’re in Mexico.

As an alumnus of Centralia Community College (out of boredom, we took a Latin class there one fall) and former southwest Washington resident, we've been following the flooding thataway with interest. A friend of ours just passed along two emails from K. in Centralia, and they can't be beat for a you-are-there feel that balances some of the apocalyptic news coverage -- let's face it, if nothing terrible happened to you, you aren't news. Once upon a time Seattlest considered North Aurora to be a shithole, to be avoided at all costs. But, eventually, we had to go to Home Depot and a used car lot, and that car rack store, and (doh) the unemployment office, and the movie theater, and IHOP and the European deli and Computer Stop and Chubby & Tubby (so far not Stupid Prices, though) and Kmart, Burgermaster, the cemetery and a hundred other tiny places the memories of which have congealed into one big impression of Aurora Avenue North. Now we consider it one of the most organic, vibrant and honest places in the city.

Considering this is Pride Weekend, you've got a bevy of options for live music in between bouts of sodomy, muff-diving, tina-using, and/or trips to Home Depot.

Urban mythology loves The _____ Guy. Seattle's got The Link Guy and used to have those motorcycle / thrash guitar guys although both seem to be in either remission or retirement. Seattlest just received via email the second mention of The Duct Tape Guy that we've come across recently.

Last night we were standing on our back porch-like thing (which is actually more related, in terms of dimensions, to a hallway except instead of a bathroom at the end of it there's a Weber) in Wallingford. It was raining and we were drinking a can of beer and wondering where all the T-storms and hail were. Never showed, Double Doppler. And we thought back on some of the heavy weather that did show up as promised in the past few months. In fact some of the shingles that were blown off of the house up the street during the wind storm are still down there in the back yard, nearly completely covered by the spring grass. That violently diagonal stump a few houses up the hill? Still there. Still more unearthed than not. And this is relatively lightly winded Wallingford. They're probably still running on battery power in Duval.

Are you ready for a brand new state legislative session?…We can't hear you! We said, are you mo-fos ready for a new state legislative session? Wow, that was even quieter than the first time. Well, regardless of your enthusiasm, the 2006 Washington State Legislative Session is underway.

Seattlest has long been vexed by the disappearance of hardware because we own a toolbelt and we need to keep a certain supply of nails in the pouch or it won’t jingle satisfactorily as we walk about, assessing DIY projects around the home.
