Heavens to Etsy: So Punk Rock

The Punk Rock Flea Market, which is happening again this weekend, is quite an event. It is a place to pick up (and show off) 7-inches, photograph artfully/oddly dressed folks and pay money for handmade or vintage versions of things that really hardcore folks would pick out of dumpsters, pull off of passed-out bodies, or just make their damn selves. But if you want the punk look (or at least some of the trappings) without the inconvenience of creation or collection, check out the 50+ vendors who'll be hawking "arts, crafts, comic books, belt buckles, bike parts, jewelry, vintage clothing, fine furniture, stereo equipment, jams and jellies, bras and panties, cakes and cookies, tools, magazines, records, musical instruments, zippo lighters, walking shoes, smoking accessories, and untold riches of punk rock paraphernalia." The slideshow features some examples of items you might see there. more ›

Heavens to Etsy: Crafty 'n Happy

Though this has been a short week for any folks who had President's Day off, it's still somehow felt long, and a bit unsettling. Perhaps it's winter's disgruntled return, roaring back to remind us that hey, it's not April yet‐February needs to give us one more cold wet kiss before slouching off for the next year. Regardless, this is a week where we needed a pick-me-up. more ›

Heavens to Etsy: La Sirena Design Studio

Seattle isn't necessarily known for its Latin flavor, but La Sirena Design Studio brings a touch of spice to the Pacific Northwest. Though owner Jalene Hernandez is temporarily buried in snow in Brooklyn, she moved to Seattle in 1996 and lives in the Fremont area. Her stylish coasters, necklaces, and magnets feature sleek mermaids, cowboys, devils, skulls, and even flowers that lend vibrant color to gray Seattle days. We talked to Jalene about her crafty origins and how she's brought her other design experience into her crafting work. more ›

Heavens to Etsy: Handcut Map of Seattle

Heavens to Etsy: Handcut Map of Seattle

Sometimes nothing's more eloquent than silence and nothing's more beautiful than negative space. This hand-cut map of Seattle from studiokmo takes advantage of that fact, turning the water and the places people live into empty space and making our roads into vast expanses of white. It's stark, it's elegant, and it shows the beautiful flow of our city. Less loud than the neighborhood maps, it still speaks volumes about Seattle. It's yours for a cool $1,000. more ›

Heavens to Etsy: UglyBaby Speaks

It's been a while since our last installment, but Heavens to Etsy is recommitted to getting you some crafty suggestions for holiday gifts. Where better to start than with UglyBaby, creator of Barter Sauce (a forum for trading odd art objects) and Unanimous Craft (a directory of independent business resources) AND EtsySaver (a way to get great deals on Etsy stuff) as well as a crafter of endearingly ugly shower art? Everyone knows someone who'd dig a weird art item to put in the shower. Read on to learn more about UglyBaby's origins as a knitting savant, interaction with dental hygienists, use of Goodwill toys, and development as a crafty businessperson. Some our our favorite moments from the conversation are in bold. more ›

Knit One, Plunder Two: Vikings and Your Grandma at the 2010 Nordic Knitting Conference

Members of Bathory may not sport Fana cardigans on stage, but knitting is actually one of the oldest Nordic crafts, and a variation on the art was even popular among the Vikings (giving a whole new, knitting needle meaning to "Viking metal"). This weekend, crafty Seattleites have a unique opportunity to learn about Nordic knitting—which includes lacemaking, two-end/twined knitting, and weaving techniques—at the Nordic Knitting Conference. And all just in time to make some mittens for winter. more ›
