As for Journey, the enthusiastic and cover-band-ish Not-Steve (aka Arnel Pineda) stole the show with his unflagging energy. No, he's not Steve Perry. But Steve Perry couldn't be leaping around on the stage like that, and Pineda sounds eerily like his predecessor. With the exception of the end of "Don't Stop Believing," Pineda's voice was strong; we got concerned during those few questionable minutes, but Not-Steve fully recovered by the first bars of "Faithfully"--a song which was quite possibly the highlight of Journey's set. The other song we loved was "Lights," during which everyone did the obligatory cell-phone/lighter wave. DRINK FOR URBAN ART: The second Northwest location of Upper Playground, a San Francisco-based urban art and clothing store, opens this weekend--and there's a swanky cocktail party/gallery viewing at Chapel on Saturday night to celebrate. The clothing and accessories at Upper Playground are the epitome of dope, but what we're really into is the art. For a sample, check out these poster prints of various artists' renderings of Obama, going for $200 a piece. We're particularly fond of this one by Mear One, an artist who will be doing a "live painting" at the Chapel party. more ›

BEST LOCAL SHOW EVER: Okay, maybe that's too strong a statement. There are people who would argue otherwise, but Seattlest is pretty thrilled with all the bands on the bill tonight at the Tractor. It's a big ol' acousti-pop night in Ballard with Grand Hallway, Kate Tucker, Odessa Chen, and Husbands Love Your Wives. Yeah, we know. Hot action. Maybe it's not as killer as a Pearl Jam-Dave Matthews-Death Cab-Heart show would be, but it's definitely the best in local music tonight. more ›
