Shellfish on Vacation

While some have expressed envy over our recent Hawaiian getaway, the jealousy should be directed at locally produced shellfish. It turns out that many Washington clams and oysters receive a tropical vacation all their own. During the winter, Shelton-based Taylor Shellfish sends larval mollusks to NELHA (Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority) in Kona, Hawaii.

Microsoftie Takes Fourth at Magic: The Gathering Grand Prix

Last weekend, more than 1,100 planeswalkers descended on Tacoma for Magic: The Gathering's Grand Prix. After the last lava axe had been wielded, the last craw wurm summoned, and the last holy strength enchantment cast, winners were announced and, lo and behold, the fourth place finisher was Seattle’s own Charles Dupont, 24, a software testing contractor for Microsoft.

Eddie Vedder's Solo Tour Not Coming to Seattle

Eddie Vedder's 2009 U.S. solo tour dates were just announced, but unfortunately there's nothing in Seattle on the schedule. The eleven-date tour kicks off June 8th in Albany, NY (of course) and ends July 2nd in Honolulu (that actually makes sense). And sorry folks, but the Hawaii dates are the closest Eddie's getting to this neck of the woods, although he did play seven shows on the West Coast (mostly California) last April, along with a ten-date East Coast tour last summer.

Joseph Skillings has had a hard year, and now it's getting worse. Back in January, he saw a man harassing someone at a bus stop; when he tried to call 911, the guy hit him in the head and Skillings fell to the ground, suffering serious brain damage. It's taken him a year of therapy and rehabilitation to be able to resume work even part-time as an elementary school teacher in Ballard. Now, a year later, the school district has been forced to lay off the poor guy for financial reasons. Owned! On the other hand, Skillings may be brain-damaged and out of a job, but he still has friends nice enough to give him frequent flyer miles so he can go to Hawaii for a month. Not too shabby.

According to the P-I, Honolulu's thinking about sending island-style trash our way. Walt Disney doesn't really tolerate landfill stench wafting over its new resorts, and there's only so much space on Hawaii for garbage (Walt Disney resort memorabilia aside), so companies are in the process of bidding for the privilege of hauling the refuse to a new mainland location. It's possible that Washington could be the trash's final resting place.
