Amy Goodman, host of independent news program Democracy Now!, spoke at a benefit for KAOS and Thurston Community Television last night in Olympia. Seattlest got stuck on the I-5 but got there five minutes before the scheduled event time; Goodman, coming from SeaTac, was not so lucky, and arrived about half an hour late.

There are many ways for a candidate to see their name in the press. Admit you're a drunk driver, get booed at your own rally, never actually vote in an election, or just get tossed in the old gray bar hotel. Green Party candidate Aaron Dixon has opted for the last two.
Last night we happened to see King5's new drama The Senate Campaign Debates and, wow, they really got a great cast for this show. All our favorite characters are in there: There's the incumbent Democrat who did a good job talking about energy and Hanford, but stumbled a bit over her one joke. There's the Republican challenger who's convinced that his business acumen will directly translate to governing goodness and that a border fence is the answer to our state's meth problem. Oh, and Safeco, Safeco, Safeco, Safeco. Did he mention Safeco? And then in a supporting role is one of our all time favorite characters: the rich guy Libertarian candidate. The pilot is already up on YouTube (Kiing5tube, actually) and if you can spare a quick hour, it's definitely worth your time. One character who didn't make it into the show, though, deserves mention - He's in the bible as part of the back story and we're sure he'll appear in a later episode. He's the Green Party candidate, played here by Aaron Dixon, a man so dedicated to this role that he woke up yesterday morning, pulled himself out of his bed and showered, threw on some shoes and a jacket, and drove himself to the studio with the very specific goal of trying to force his way into a political debate between candidates for the United States Senate. And getting arrested. And he succeeded. Aaron Dixon, for absolutely nailing the part of the fringe candidate and for having the courage to stick to the script, we salute you.
As fall settles in and another calendar page gets turned, thoughts turn from bbq's and vacations to holidays and the realization that '06 is coming to an end. With all that going on, with change in the air, we wonder what is it that made that makes the -ists ponder?
Kids looking for a summer job might want to consider running against Maria Cantwell.
There are many things that Seattle liberals hate: the increasing price of fleece vests, driving over 25mph on arterials, and when one of their senators votes for war in the Middle East.
When the Green Party offered up Aaron Dixon as a candidate for the US senate there was a lot of talk in the media about how he could never win it but wouldn't it be interesting if he played spoiler. He'd been on the block for about a week before progressive writer Dave Goldstein dismantled his candidacy and any hopes he had of spoiling anything. Apparently Goldstein was the first person to attempt to look up the guy's voting record. Registered, but inactive. The Green Party candidate for senator from the state of Washington has never voted.
Much like that wacky, lasagna-loving Garfield, we hate Mondays. Unlike that darn cat, we dislike the first day of the week mainly out of fear our annoying office mate will once again say 'Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays' while chuckling to herself about her wit. We are, however, a little excited about this upcoming Monday because according to our beloved Washington State Senate, Monday is KEXP Day.
