Kurt Cobain’s widow and his hometown have a lot in common. Both Courtney Love and Aberdeen have battled substance abuse. Both are scorned for their blighted appearance. And both had a lot of wood running through them in their heyday.

Someone called Chemical Consortium Holdings, Inc. made an interesting announcement today. With a scary name like that you'd expect them to issue a press release saying that they absolutely refute all charges brought against them by the EPA, however in this case they have something positive to say. Today they announced that they're building a Biodiesel plant in Walla Walla that will be capable of producing 60 million gallons of fuel a year. Yay Chemical Consortium Holdings, Inc.
A new biodiesel refinery in Western Washington was announced Tuesday that would dwarf the 5 million gallons a year that local guys Seattle Biodiesel (actually it's the same guys: Imperium Renewables) can currently come up with. Supposedly the new Gray's Harbor plant will be able to produce 100 million gallons of biodiesel fuel a year which there may actually be a market for due to The Energy Freedom legislation passed in the state earlier this year which says that 2% of all diesel used in Washington will need to be biodiesel by 2008.
There's a wave of staph infections sweeping the penninsula according to The Daily World and just because we don't want to be the only ones creeped out by this short description of an infection we're sharing it with you here. Sorry.
We’ve always been intrigued by corn mazes -- especially since, if memory serves, one was once made out of Ichiro’s face -- but we’ve never tried one ourselves. So we recently spent an autumn afternoon in the Snohomish River Valley, about a 35-mile drive north of Seattle, visiting “Washington’s Largest Corn Maze”. It’s actually a 12-acre stand shaped like the Evergreen State, roughly 1/3,802,827th the size.
Ah summer in Seattle. You never know what you might find around the bend. Whether it’s 19 cannons being fired off at Pier 36 this morning, bad traffic, or the Blue Angels screeching overhead, Seafair continues into August. So don’t forget to check the schedule to mark where you want to be or not be. Personally Seattlest can’t wait for the Parade of Ships on August 3rd. And guess what? You can actually take a cruise around the Sound on an aircraft carrier if you play your cards right. Here’s an interesting discussion going on about Seattlites’ feelings about Seafair in the PI.
It comes out first and their features have been consistently decent, so the Weekly's cover story is a good place to start. This week's "Black, White and Redneck" (or toned down to "Black and White in Grays Harbor County" once you get past the cover) is a little uninspiring, though, so let's leave it at that.
