Politically-Themed Public Bathroom Graffiti Fail

Your message would be far more effective if you learned how to spell its subject correctly.

"Queers Against Gentrification," spotted by the lovely and talented Katelyn Hackett on Capitol Hill "right across from the light rail construction site, John and...10th, I guess." ACT UP! indeed.

Man, a tagger just cannot catch a break in this town! The Washington State Patrol is now using infrared to spot graffiti writers working on property that is, how you say...not legally designated for graffiti. That's serious dedication on the WSP's part. Does this strike anyone else as an eerily familiar smash-up of Fahrenheit 451 and The Giver?

Seattlest Q&A: SlightlyNorth Talks SoDo And Graffiti

One of our favorite Flickr pool contributors is Shawn "SlightlyNorth" McClung, a Denver transplant with an eye for graffiti and the wilds of SoDo. After ogling a whopping ten of his Flickr sets in SlightlyNorth's "Ephemeral Art" collection, we asked the man to tell us more about his photography, the tagging community, and his abiding love for an often-neglected neighborhood.

Someone recently spray-painted “Punk is not dead,” etc., on a fence near our house--which is essentially the bank’s house, since we have two adjustable-rate mortgages.

Recently, the good things in life have seemed 'blink and you miss it,' while the trying times have been 24/7. Here's a reminder to blink and see the good things around us more often. If you happen to catch that 'blink moment' with the click of a shutter, please do share it with the Seattlest Flickr Pool.

This photo from our pool was taken a year ago, at a time when it seemed like that dude who was talking about hope and change was a serious long-shot for his party's nomination. Seattlest remembers that very well, because we've been obsessed with this damn election for that long (actually, quite a bit longer than that, even).

Seattlest ended up with somewhat of an autumnal equinox-inspired mini-cold this weekend, a condition which put a damper on our plans to partake in extensive martini consumption. Still, we managed to make it to Chapel for the Upper Playground cocktail party, where we discussed Thai food, Ken Kesey, and the visual arts as social thought experiment with local artist and musician Rob Castro. The brightest star of the night was Mear One, who painted and re-painted this stretch of canvas over the course of the five hour party and allowed himself to be the recipient of much gawking on Seattlest's part. The writing in the painting reads, "THE GOV LIES TO YOU."

  • Capitol Hill Seattle has found the answer to the "graffiti problem"--passive aggressive semi-anonymous notes. Because passive aggressiveness has worked so well at solving everything else in Seattle.
  • If you like mojitos as much as we do, you might be tempted by this Belltowner post. Apparently, the failed Mojito Cafe is selling their big neon sign on Craigslist.
  • Lights & Sirens brings us the sad and disturbing story of a Tacoma woman who is reportedly suing the city of Tacoma, Pierce County, and a retired Tacoma police officer, after videos of her sexual abuse were found in the disgraced officer's private collection. The officer, who illegally kept the video of her abuse, has recently been sent to jail for first-degree child rape.

We had a laid-back, happy time at Dope Emporium on Saturday. It felt like a hiphop block party: a family affair with barbeque, a beer garden, and kids running around doing cute things like breakdancing. There even was a producers' battle from which MTK (of Himalayan Rickshaw Run fame) emerged triumphant. Check out some photos from the event, taken by Seattlest and Terry Creighton.

"No Future" by Shawn McClung (Slightlynorth)

Seattlest is a big fan of graffiti, as long as it's not some silly kid tagging the side of someone's house. We like graffiti as art, we appreciate political statements writ large on sidewalks and the walls of abandoned buildings. We're not advocating anything, we're just saying.

There's some sort of primeval or subconscious part of our brains that remains fascinated with the potential magic of spaces we can't enter, whether it's down a rabbit hole, on the other side of a mirror, or the life of things within the walls of our home. The work of Dutch artist Femke Hiemstra, which goes on display at Roq la Rue tonight, captures that fascination with whimsy and wit. Her paintings demonstrate a miniaturist's attention to detail as well as a wildly active imagination. Her paintings on found objects, like , beg us to see the potential magic in the everyday.

The Woods Coffee Shop in Bellingham was victim to two insults this weekend--theft and vandals who didn't take the care to spell their message properly. Someone caused over a thousand dollars of damage, smashing in a tempered window and plate glass. Also left behind at the scene of the crime, some misspelled political graffiti. "Facsism (sic) begins with the sale of public space" was stenciled on two of the remaining windows.

Architecture writer Lawrence Cheek writes in today's P-I about two historic properties--one landmarked and one not, respectively--that have been undergoing some creative adaptive reuses: Queen Anne High School and the old Rainier (Sick's) Brewery in SoDo. We were fortunate enough to take a tour of the latter earlier this month.
