The Tacoma soldier who is accused of killing a fellow army couple and kidnapping their infant has been transferred to the custody of the United States Army. The Army will prosecute Specialist Ivette Gonzalez Davila for the murders of Army medics Timothy and Randi Miller, who were doused in acid after being shot. Davila was transferred yesterday from Pierce County Jail to the brig at Bangor's sub base. The Army is expected to charge Davila with the Millers' murders within the next 48 hours.

Get Out Saturday: Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band @ EMP's Sky Church
When your band's roster (Gonzalez on trumpet and congas; Andy Gonzalez, bass; Larry Willis, piano; Steve Berrios, drums; Joe Ford, sax/flute) has been in place since 1990, you have time to develop the musical telepathy that makes jazz jazz. And when that telepathy communicates both the bebop-and-beyond mainstream and Puerto Rican popular music (via the Bronx), you have an unusually savory mix.
Jose Gonzalez / Tiny Vipers @ the Showbox
People are strange. They say Ann Coulter is funny. They pay a $20 cover to have a conversation in a club. At the Showbox a few weeks ago, we saw Lavender Diamond, opening for the New Pornographers, cut their set short after telling the audience it was hard to play with all the talking going on. So we were worried heading back to the Showbox for the Jose Gonzalez/Tiny Vipers show because neither of them promised to be able to crush a babbling crowd into submission like the Pornographers could, and did.
Woah Wait a Minute. What's That Buried in the P-I?
The headline: "White House E-Mail Inquiry Will Widen." The story: how the Bush administration has quite possibly made a major infraction, broken big giant rules, or in the 's words, "committed 'extensive' [legal] violations."
Speaking Tour: 4/23 - 4/29
SHERMAN FREAKING ALEXIE: The best-selling author returns with his first novel in ten years. Flight tells the story of an orphaned Indian boy who travels back and forth through time in a violent search for his true identity. Real Change-published poets (that would actually include Alexie, too) read as part of the program.
Speaking Tour: 4/9 - 4/15
PREQUEL TO MCARTNEY'S WINGS: Richie Unterberger, the author of several books on the history of rock, shows some film footage and plays some music recordings of unreleased Beatles material. He´s promoting his latest book, The Unreleased Beatles -- Music and Film. We had no idea they were in jail! (Ha! Because of the "unreleased" -- see how...oh...sure, we can move on.)
Those Responsible for Sacking the People Who Have Just Been Sacked, Have Been Sacked
Kyle Sampson, the top aide to Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, has resigned, as it becomes more and more clear that US attorneys who were fired in December, including Seattle-based John McKay, were fired for political reasons.
Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
Let's take a look back at a week that raised this Zen koan: if Kevin Federline got into a wrestling ring with a wrestler, who would you root for?
Bumbershoot Day Two: So Very Tired
Jose Gonzalez - Seattlest managed to find entry into the KEXP's live broadcast area featuring Bumbershoot artists. Jose Gonzalez's set was absolutely perfect, the smaller crowd (~30 people) and intimate staging perfect for his one man, one guitar formula. It was funny to watch some of the ladies get swoony over him, and we have to admit we were getting pretty starry eyed ourselves.
Bumbershoot Day 2: Is It Over Yet?
We hate to sound cynical and old, but my god! Day two at Bumbershoot felt a lot like a tenth grade field trip to white people's rock and roll camp. We ain't dissing the kiddies, but when we head to the overcrowded, sweat-drenched beer gardens just to be amongst people our age, it's worth mentioning.
Isn't Bumbershoot Like Tomorrow?
What a great way to close out the summer: Beer, fried food on stick, irritatingly large crowds, great music, and a slight chance of rain (remember last year?). Seattlest loves us some Bumbershoot though, and we wouldn't let some pesky weather ruin our fun. This year looks to be a good one. A couple things we are digging right off the bat are the addition of good bands on the outdoor stages and ditching the Friday festivities before the weekend (we never went on that day anyway).
Seattlest Recommends: Jose Gonzalez
All this good music on a school night, what's a working kid to do? We didn't bother getting a ticket to the sold out Black Angels show at Chop Suey. We're scared of the dark anyway. We were too busy getting hyped for Swedish folk sensation Jose Gonzalez at Neumos tonight. Relatively unknown in the states, his debut album Veneer is straight "blowin' up" in the U.K. and for good reason. The first listen is usually enough to hook most listeners we've had sample it. No prior folk experience required. And don't let the name confuse you either; Jose will flat out amaze you with his classical guitar and delicate lyrics. His stripped down sound is remarkably modern, yet simple. Not what you'd expect. Just try not to snicker when you ask your "other" friends how the Tapes n Tapes show was…
Bumpershoots Adds Some Local Flavour
Bumbershoot sent out an email this morning announcing a bunch of acts for this year's Smaller, Better Festival. There's even more hiphop on the bill with the addition of local act Blue Scholars and Common Market and Brit chick Lady Sovereign (who we're looking forward to seeing with The Streets soon). Area indie rockers Crystal Skulls and Rocky Votolato will be there and to continue the trend of one Brit band for every couple of local acts Badly Drawn Boy is now scheduled.
Tectonic Shift
A while back, before we got strep throat from making out with ten-year-olds, we were at the Capitol Hill Arts Center for the opening night performance of Cloud Tectonics, the first play of their 2005-2006 theatre season. This piece has a lot going for it: it's written by José Rivera, who has several other great plays up his sleeve, as well as an Oscar nomination for the screenplay of The Motorcycle Diaries (watch for his script on another journey film, the upcoming version of On the Road); the set is extensive and well-designed; all the performances (by Todd Licea, Jennifer Faulkner, and Ray Gonzalez) are strong and nuanced. And yet, the play didn't entirely work for us. What the dilly, yo?
Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something cool to hang above my couch.
Roq la Rue, Seattlest's favorite purveyor of lowbrow art and pop surrealism, is opening its new gallery space tonight with "Bad Moon Rising," their annual Halloween group show. Stop by and ogle artwork by Ojimbo, Jim Blanchard, Lisa Petrucci, Pooch, Mike Leavitt, Mike Curato, James McLeod, Travis Louie, Ryan Bubnis, Joshua Petker, Brian Despain, Anthony Ausgang, Johnny Crap, Nicole Steen, Yo Ueno, Joe Vollan, Amanda Wachob, Jason D’Aquino, David Rauschenberg, Chuck Demorat, Justin Hampton, Quintin Gonzalez, Mark Ryden, Marion Peck, and Luke Chueh.
Weekend O' Music
Saturday night offered quite the dilemma for indie rock fans: Should one buy tickets for the KEXP Benefit show at Neumo's or Franz Ferdinand at the Paramount? Luckily, Franz was also playing the following night, which allowed Seattlest to attend both shows and not miss a thing.
Ballots Found. Job Lost?
Don’t you hate it when you lose your keys and waste an entire morning looking for them, only to find 93 uncounted ballots instead? Well, that’s the feeling down at King County Elections as ballots continue to show up in the darndest places.
