The Tacoma soldier who is accused of killing a fellow army couple and kidnapping their infant has been transferred to the custody of the United States Army. The Army will prosecute Specialist Ivette Gonzalez Davila for the murders of Army medics Timothy and Randi Miller, who were doused in acid after being shot. Davila was transferred yesterday from Pierce County Jail to the brig at Bangor's sub base. The Army is expected to charge......

Unfortunately, the following story is not a plot-outline for next weeks Law & Order or CSI. Rather it's the gruesome fate a young army couple met this weekend in Parkland, WA. Randi and Timothy Miller were shot in their home this weekend and then doused in muriatic acid, in hopes that the evidence of their killing would be destroyed. The suspect, Spc. Ivette Gonzalez Davila, also kidnapped the couple's young child, Cassidy. Davila was......

When your band's roster (Gonzalez on trumpet and congas; Andy Gonzalez, bass; Larry Willis, piano; Steve Berrios, drums; Joe Ford, sax/flute) has been in place since 1990, you have time to develop the musical telepathy that makes jazz jazz. And when that telepathy communicates both the bebop-and-beyond mainstream and Puerto Rican popular music (via the Bronx), you have an unusually savory mix. We first heard the Fort Apache Band on a very early (1988)......

People are strange. They say Ann Coulter is funny. They pay a $20 cover to have a conversation in a club. At the Showbox a few weeks ago, we saw Lavender Diamond, opening for the New Pornographers, cut their set short after telling the audience it was hard to play with all the talking going on. So we were worried heading back to the Showbox for the Jose Gonzalez/Tiny Vipers show because neither of......

The headline: "White House E-Mail Inquiry Will Widen." The story: how the Bush administration has quite possibly made a major infraction, broken big giant rules, or in the P-I's words, "committed 'extensive' [legal] violations." Remember that whole Alberto Gonzalez thing? Where it was speculated that the Attorney General deliberately fired a bevy of federal attorneys for political reasons, to appease a certain political agenda? There was a moment during all that hoo-ah when someone mentioned......

Monday PREQUEL TO MCARTNEY'S WINGS: Richie Unterberger, the author of several books on the history of rock, shows some film footage and plays some music recordings of unreleased Beatles material. He´s promoting his latest book, The Unreleased Beatles -- Music and Film. We had no idea they were in jail! (Ha! Because of the "unreleased" -- see how...oh...sure, we can move on.) 7pm // Seattle Central Public Library Microsoft Auditorium // FREE GARDENING AT......

Kyle Sampson, the top aide to Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, has resigned, as it becomes more and more clear that US attorneys who were fired in December, including Seattle-based John McKay, were fired for political reasons. On his blog, the Seattle Times' David Postman eviscerates Gonzalez' explanation of the firings. Gonzalez himself canceled travel plans and testified to Congress today, admitting that "mistakes were made." Now, Democrats want Gonzalez to resign, and we can't help......

Let's take a look back at a week that raised this Zen koan: if Kevin Federline got into a wrestling ring with a wrestler, who would you root for? Austinist was in an entertainment state of mind as they covered the dickens out of the Austin Film Festival, depicted all the Big 12 football coaches as South Park characters, and interviewed Jose Gonzalez. Chicagoist talked about the passion as they bid adieu to Bell......

So we didn't make Dengue Fever. The walk to Seattle Center took just a bit longer than we'd planned. Oh well. Day two was spent in varying states of rest, the day ending up more about the festival on the whole than music. The highlights: Jose Gonzalez - Seattlest managed to find entry into the KEXP's live broadcast area featuring Bumbershoot artists. Jose Gonzalez's set was absolutely perfect, the smaller crowd (~30 people) and......

We hate to sound cynical and old, but my god! Day two at Bumbershoot felt a lot like a tenth grade field trip to white people's rock and roll camp. We ain't dissing the kiddies, but when we head to the overcrowded, sweat-drenched beer gardens just to be amongst people our age, it's worth mentioning. That said, day two was (a) crazy crowded (we spent 15 minutes in the crossroads by the cajun salmon booth,......

What a great way to close out the summer: Beer, fried food on stick, irritatingly large crowds, great music, and a slight chance of rain (remember last year?). Seattlest loves us some Bumbershoot though, and we wouldn't let some pesky weather ruin our fun. This year looks to be a good one. A couple things we are digging right off the bat are the addition of good bands on the outdoor stages and ditching the......

Love Bumbershoot, but wish it were more elitist? You're in luck. New this year, however, is a tiny, private venue that you won’t find on any map. The new "Bumbershoot Music Lounge" will showcase intimate interviews and performances with some of the hottest Bumbershoot artists, and the only way to be a part of the live studio audience is to win an invitation from one of two Seattle radio stations, or be a lucky......

All this good music on a school night, what's a working kid to do? We didn't bother getting a ticket to the sold out Black Angels show at Chop Suey. We're scared of the dark anyway. We were too busy getting hyped for Swedish folk sensation Jose Gonzalez at Neumos tonight. Relatively unknown in the states, his debut album Veneer is straight "blowin' up" in the U.K. and for good reason. The first listen......

Bumbershoot sent out an email this morning announcing a bunch of acts for this year's Smaller, Better Festival. There's even more hiphop on the bill with the addition of local act Blue Scholars and Common Market and Brit chick Lady Sovereign (who we're looking forward to seeing with The Streets soon). Area indie rockers Crystal Skulls and Rocky Votolato will be there and to continue the trend of one Brit band for every couple of......

A while back, before we got strep throat from making out with ten-year-olds, we were at the Capitol Hill Arts Center for the opening night performance of Cloud Tectonics, the first play of their 2005-2006 theatre season. This piece has a lot going for it: it's written by José Rivera, who has several other great plays up his sleeve, as well as an Oscar nomination for the screenplay of The Motorcycle Diaries (watch for his......

Saturday night offered quite the dilemma for indie rock fans: Should one buy tickets for the KEXP Benefit show at Neumo's or Franz Ferdinand at the Paramount? Luckily, Franz was also playing the following night, which allowed Seattlest to attend both shows and not miss a thing. The KEXP Benefit show featured six acts, so it started early---doors at 5, first act at 6:30pm early. Had that first act been anybody but Math and Physics......

When can the Tyrone Willingham Era be said to begin? The day the UW hired him to coach the Husky football team? The first day of spring practice? The first game? The first time he appears, as he inevitably will, in a commercial for Pro Golf Discount? This is one of life's enduring mysteries. But, for the sake of this post, let's say that the Tyrone Willingham era begins today--the first day of fall practice......

Don’t you hate it when you lose your keys and waste an entire morning looking for them, only to find 93 uncounted ballots instead? Well, that’s the feeling down at King County Elections as ballots continue to show up in the darndest places. The revelation of these found ballots has King County Elections Director Dean Logan under fire. Republican Council Members Reagan Dunn and Steve Hammond both sent him letters asking for his resignation.......
