(via PubliCola) We were just reminded that French New Waver J-L Godard's tribute to The Big Sleep and sociocultural criticism, Made in the U.S.A., is half-price ($4.50) at the Northwest Film Forum tonight (7, 9 p.m.). Hard to say no to that, especially since you won't see it anywhere but in a theater. The New York Times--you wouldn't argue with an old gray lady, would you?--says, "Godard’s ultimate statement about his love/hate for the aesthetics/politics of American movies/life is an event to be savored and celebrated." (Mondays--if you were as unaware as we were until just minutes ago--are Happy Mondays at NWFF, and you can get tickets at the box office for half-price.)

For eleven more days, it's all Godard all the time, and this week's roster features most of the French auteur's greatest hits. Tonight it's Tarantino's favorite heist flick Band of Outsiders, tomorrow is Masculine Feminine, Wednesday is Pierrot le Fou, Thursday is the startling directorial debut Breathless, and the week-long run of the new 35mm print of Vivre Sa Vie starts this Friday. That leaves Saturday morning for the best Godard film of all time: The Neverending Story, an in-depth exploration of the contentious relationship that often exists between children and flying dogs.

Characters: A mysterious blond woman slightly cuter than Brigitte Bardot (to be referred to as Femme Seattlest-Hater) and a mysterious man not quite as cute as Michel Piccoli wearing nothing but a towel and black socks (to be known as Homme Seattlest-Hater). Cue that awful Contempt theme music, whatever it's called, that plays over and over again throughout the movie.

Last night the Northwest Film Forum had a line out the door with moviegoers eager for some classic European cinema. As previously mentioned, the Italian sex comedy Divorce--Italian Style (and its follow-up, Seduced and Abandoned) are showing in the small theater through tomorrow, leaving the big one to hold the main event, the NWFF's latest film series, Duel of the Cool.

Ah, those crazy Frenchies, at it again. This time, they're going to pull off a robbery. The gang that couldn't shoot straight, but with accents, The Band of Outsiders. The cute gal is Anna Karina, her boyfriends are Claude Brasseur and Sami Frey, and the director is the embodiment of French cinema's nouvelle vague, Jean-Luc Godard.
