The current deputy chief of Seattle police, John Diaz, will step up as interim police chiefin Kerlikowske's absence if (let's face it, when) Kerlikowske's appointment as Obama's Drug Czar is confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday. Diaz isn't terribly popular or supported by the rest of the department, so we're thinking all the noise about applying for the permanent position is probably not going to come to fruition. To hear him say it, he's not supported because he's been involved in so many disciplinary decisions over his 29-year career with the SPD. Being the boss means making unpopular decisions sometimes, but maybe there's more to the story (please, local gossip gods, let there be more).

This morning, the president announced that Seattle Chief of Police Gil Kerlikowske is his pick for the nation's new Drug Czar. That means a local will direct national drug policy, though the position will no longer be Cabinet-level. (Curiously enough, Vice President Biden coined the phrase "drug czar" in the first place.) As the Washington Post notes in a blog post about the announcement, Kerlikowske's appointment to the position was delayed because of his stepson's legal problems--Jeffrey Kerlikowske was arrested recently for violating parole from his drug and assault charges in Florida.
The reports that "sources within the local law enforcement community have said that recently set plans indicate Kerlikowske has been chosen for a federal post." The nature of that post remains unclear, though the rumor is Drug Czar.
, "Seventeen bouncers, bartenders and other nightclub employees were arrested Saturday night for allegedly violating state liquor laws."
After all, the Seattle P-I's got a story on the recent street violence, the Seattle Times has coverage of the war zone and the thug factor. And although three of the four incidents since June occurred after 10pm, it's easily worth the $500,000 the city will spend over the next four months to keep lunch hour safe in Westlake Park. We were there, and we've never felt more secure -- which was great because we couldn't find any bike racks in front of Westlake Mall and had to lock our bike to a trash can.
Swoop, the mascot of Eastern Washington University, was stomped outside a bar Sunday night and briefly detained by none other than police chief Gil Kerlikowske. Apparently. Reports the Seattle P-I:
Lt. Kenneth Hicks, shift commander at the precinct that includes Pioneer Square, was leading Kerlikowske on a closing-time tour of the club district when the senior officers witnessed a man-on-eagle fracas, according to police documents.Continue reading "With So Much Drama From the SPD, It's Kinda Hard Bein' S-Dubya-O-O-P"
Alright, it's probably time to start paying attention. This is the story of the guy in the wheel chair that the bicycle cops arrested on drug charges that you've probably seen on the news, or, if you haven't, you will soon. The arrest was videotaped and the tape fails to show the arrest as it was depicted by the officers in their report. You can watch it here, or if that doesn't work it's linked from the Times' website. A forensic video analyst has submitted a report on his examination of the video and the police report and he's calling bullshit on the SPD. Didn't happen like that, he says of the police report. The police report claims that a rock was found in his lap and that that's why they stopped him in the first place. The video analyst's report says they don't appear to have found anything in his lap and they roughed him up a bit with some unnecessary clamp holds.
All that traffic in Queen Anne this morning is because Elliott Avenue is closed, and Elliott Avenue is closed because some late dumbshit stole a car, sped through a red light without his lights on, and broadsided a recently hired Seattle cop on her way to work, killing her. From the P-I:
It's a little tough to admit that we're experiencing some Huff Fatigue at Seattlest HQ. This is Seattle's big story from the past several months, though - When newspaper's outside of the city mention us it's almost guaranteed to be in the context of some mass murderer story, which, frankly gets a little old when you have so much other stuff going on that might be of news value to the rest of the world. Until something else sensational happens, however, we're Seattle: Home of Huff.
With clear blue skies and temperatures in the mid-to-upper sixties it was beautiful weather for parking it for an afternoon or hitting the bike trail this weekend. Maybe you pulled the tarp off the boat, maybe you dug a frisbee or a tennis raquet out of the closet, maybe you shot a bunch of people: You really can't go wrong with weather like this.
John Bruce "Jack" Thompson is an attorney often cited in the media for his views on the effects of obscenity and violence in popular media. That's cribbed directly out of the Wikipedia entry for him and that same Wikipedia entry contains a large warning that the neutrality of the entry is disputed, which is cool to see in an encyclopedia. Jack Thompson has been hating on popular culture (the neutraility of this post should definitely be disputed) since lawsuits against 2 Live Crew back in the Eighties. Howard Stern, Grand Theft Auto, the list of defendants contains all the usual suspects.
Whatcha gonna do when Kerlikowske comes for you?
We reported that members of the Seattle Police Department were under internal and FBI investigation concerning their relationships with various city night clubs, including Rick's topless club. The relationships were said to be potentially problematic because similar romances in the past had come to a bad end for the SPD, but in this case the officers under investigation will not be charged by federal or state prosecutors.
