When Seattlest was 19, we decided it might be fun to leave our small southern town to head north for college. We chose a random school in Buffalo, New York, because it seemed like it would be a total change of pace—the second largest city in one of the largest states in the union, lots of Rust Belt charm, different weather patterns. Our sister sent us a story called "A Southerner Moves North," which talked about how the first couple weeks of snow were delightful and charming, magical, fun. By the end of the winter, the "southerner" is cursing the gods for their uncaring wrath and the evil that is the Snowplow Man.

Remember the Sasquatch/Bigfoot corpse found in Georgia recently? Last week we heard it "failed a DNA test"--and this week, we find it failed the DNA test because the corpse was made out of rubber. Are we the only Pacific Northwestern child ever regaled with medium-tall tales about the Quarks that roam local forests? Surely, those are real.

An unconfirmed report in the 's Big Blog claims members of the local Georgian community and their supporters plan a protest today at noon at the Russian consulate at Sixth & Virginia. The protest is in response to Russia's attack on Georgian territory following Georgia's failed attempt late last week to recapture the breakaway region of South Ossetia. Relations between Georgia and Russia have been strained for years, since pro-Western President Mikheil Saakashvili came to power in 2003's Rose Revolution. Russia under the nationalist Vladimir Putin has sought to keep neighboring countries and former Soviet republics like Georgia and Ukraine from moving into the Western fold.
