Seattlest Curmudgeons: Flash Mobs Are Over, Also a Terrible Birthday Present, Even to a Statue

The Seattlest Curmudgeon returns to poop on all your parties. The party in question this time? The birthday party for Rachel, the coin-filled, porcine Pike Place mascot. A flash mob? Really? more ›

The World of Jewtopia Coming to Seattle

Slideshows are awesome. Remember in the TV series The Wonder Years, when Ben Stein plays Kevin Arnold’s slideshow-happy, monotone 7th grade science teacher? The World of Jewtopia is kinda like that— in all its slideshow multimedia glory (plus funny Jews, minus the droning teacher). more ›

Journos Desperately Seeking Funding--Again

The Seattle PostGlobe's recent plea for funding very nearly reads like a script produced for an NPR pledge drive, minus all the cool giveaways. Free swag aside, the news site has re-sounded the alarm, reporting they have only one week of funding remaining in their reserves...and leaving us to wonder whether this time next week we will have to ask what the Seattle Post-Intelligencer ex-pats will be doing post-PostGlobe? more ›

Northwest Film Forum: "Will Screen Indie Films for Cash"

We were at the Northwest Film Forum last night--Throw Down Your Heart, the Béla Fleck banjo-across-Africa documentary ends tomorrow night--and executive director Lyall Bush came out with a tip jar, asking for $35,000. That sounds like a lot, but just a little while ago it was $70,000. So they are halfway, but August 15th is almost here. If you haven't given yet (suggested donation is actually $10, if you don't have the whole $35,000), think about donating or getting a membership. more ›

PostGlobe: Tenants Union Makes Rent Fundraising Goal

Seattle PostGlobe's Kery Murakami follows up on his earlier story about the Tenants Union travails with the good news that an anonymous donor has handed over $25,000.The Tenants Union helps out renters with a range of advice and aid (hotline: 206-723-0500 ); not everyone knows their rights as a renter and not every landlord is scrupulous about the law. When King County cut their funding recently, the Union was sent scrambling for cash, raising about $17,000 before they hit the $25,000 jackpot. Anonymous donor, you're one of us. more ›

A Couple More Reasons to Hit Up the Decibel Fundraiser Tonight

Tonight Seattle's premier electronic music festival, Decibel, throws their first-ever fundraising gala at the Triple Door. It's primed to be a very special event, with relaxing music, engaging visuals, and delicious food. If you're looking to reduce cost, you can even skip out on the dinner selection and get in half price ($25 instead of $50 with a gourmet dinner selection). more ›

When Psychotic Boyfriends Attack

One of the more bizarre stories we've reported on in the past few months now has a compassionate, helping-hand update. Remember the woman who was stabbed by her boyfriend in Lower Queen Anne? At the time, the story was that he intended her as some kind of human sacrifice, though now Heidi Gardner says she was misquoted by the Times--he had some sort of psychotic break, there was no altar. We just received a legit email from one of the victim's friends, letting us know about a fund she's set up to raise money to help with Heidi's towering medical bills. If you have a spare $10 and feel compelled to help out a knife-wounded sister, by all means head over to heidifund.org. more ›

Justin Carder Wants You! (To Save the Summit & John Park)

Justin Carder Wants You! (To Save the Summit & John Park)

Seattlest is instituting a new guest editorial thing on the grounds that our readers get tired of hearing the usual suspects snark about things and would like to hear new snarky voices. Last week it was Proposition 8. This week, we have Justin Carder--chair of the Capitol Hill Community Council, vice president of business development for Instivate, and founder of the Web site CHS Capitol Hill Seattle--and his plea for a park's existence. more ›

Ready for an Obama-Gregoire Fist Bump?

If you're not, you better get ready. Michelle Obama, the future First Lady of the United States, will be joining Washington Governor Christine Gregoire onstage for a fundraising event in July. Somehow this fundraising event is free—seems like flawed logic to us—and open to the public. It will take place on July 17th at WaMu Theatre at Qwest Field from noon to 3 p.m. more ›
