Last week we were taking Husky football with a friend who was upset that the University hadn't fired coach Ty Willingham. We mentioned that, though he hadn't won many games, Willingham had restored integrity to the football program.

Mountain Loop Takes Another
Last night while having dinner at Friend A's house, the wife got a call from Friend B with whom she and A had gone snowshoeing on Friday. Friend B was calling because she had read the newspaper and discovered a story about an avalanche that happened on the trail they took.
A group of youths aged 12 to 16 and an adult were hiking near Lake 22, a popular trail off the Mountain Loop Highway east of Granite Falls, when the avalanche hit Friday afternoon, said spokeswoman Rebecca Hover with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office.

Participate In the Demise of Rainier Cold Storage
The Rainier Cold Storage Stock House--part of the beautiful and historic and absolutely irreplaceable Rainier Cold Storage campus in Georgetown--is being replaced. The building cannot be saved as Seattlest has previously discussed here and here, and a campaign to try to force property owners Sabey Corp. to preserve it as-is seems like it wouldn't hold up in the face of the condition of the building, despite the Seattle Historic Landmark status it currently enjoys. Brooke Best, Friend of Georgetown History, told Seattlest in an email, "Sabey made great efforts (beyond what most developers would have done) to come up with alternative proposals to demolition." But demolition it is.

Last Chance for Menomena Tix!
Portland experimental rockers Menomena are coming to Neumos this Friday with openers All Smiles and Grand Archives.
Win Menomena Tix
Portland's electro post-rock outfit Menomena is known for both their abstract pop hooks and digital loops. They'll be breaking out the guitars, keyboard, organ, drums, saxomophones, glockenspiel, and multi-part harmonies for their upcoming show at Neumo's this weekend. Stream their latest album, the exceedingly well-reviewed Friend or Foe, here. And fill out the entry form below for your chance to win a pair of tickets to Saturday's Friday's show, as well as a copy of the aforementioned album and a totally bitchin' poster. Considering Saturday Friday night's event also includes openers the post-Grandaddy solo effort All Smiles and mega up-and-comers Grand Archives, this is a show you can't afford to miss. We'll be drawing the name of one winner Thursday at noon.
Spencer Hawes Denied His Dream of an NIT Championship
The Huskies weren't among the 64 teams picked for the NCAA tournament, then neither were they among the 32 teams picked for the NIT. Down here at Seattlest HQ, stunned silence. After the first two regions were revealed, we sort of joked, "Uh-oh, looks like we didn't make it!" And then, when the final bracket was shown, well, wow...we really didn't make it!
Seattle Listens
There' a constant ebb and flow when it comes to the music we love. Sometimes it seems like there's just nothing interesting out there. Nothing to light us up when we listen at home, in our car or on the bus, eyes closed. And then sometimes we find ourselves hauling fist-fulls of new music to the counter of our favorite record store.
We Asked An Uptight Seattleite Of Our Own
The first time we saw "Ask an Uptight Seattleite" in Seattle Weekly we thought it was a fake headline for "Ask a Mexican" and was supposed to be some kind of joke reaction to Seattle's reaction to "Ask a Mexican." Then we read it and it was the funniest thing we've probably ever read in the Weekly. It was funny and accurate (and exactly the kind of thing that would be great on Seattlest) and it gave us a glimmer of hope for the alt-weekly that's been living under a cloud of Big Changes Coming for, it seems like, ever. If this is the new Weekly, the promised New Yorker of Seattle, maybe it's going to work. Maybe it can make its way back into must-readville, assuming it ever had an address there. We weren't born here, so who knows.
World Cup Notes
On one hand, the U.S. team gave an encouraging performance in their 1-1 tie with Italy over the weekend and managed to avoid the label "mathematically eliminated" at least for another few days. On the other hand, being excited about a tie with the boot nation in any endeavour is downright unAmerican. Outside the confines of our little Group E, the soccer powers continue their relentless march into the later stages. Germany, England, Argentina, Brazil, Spain. Boooor-ring. Are there any wee teams out there that can knock out a giant? It appears not.
Weekend Art
First Thursday passed, and if you did the Walk that doesn't mean that you've put in your art appreciation time for the month and you're off the hook. There're some exhibits worth seeing at COCA and Born Magazine's "Help Wanted" show, specifically the "Afterwords" video wall. Don't miss it--it's behind the rummage sale/"Estate of Beverly Thomas" piece.
