Seattlest Suggests: Shenandoah Davis CD Release w/ Paleo Tonight

Seattlest Suggests: Shenandoah Davis CD Release w/ Paleo Tonight

The Seattle music scene is rife with musicians intermingling amongst bands as well as breaking off to perform solo as well. Shenandoah Davis is one of these incredibly talented artists taking part in several bands' shows, as a permanent fixture in Grand Hallway and a budding solo career. Everything she's involved in basically turns to aural gold. Being one of the very few talented accordion players in the city doesn't hurt her popularity either especially with the prominence of orchestral pop these days. more ›

The Round Turns Six, Let's Dance!

The Round Turns Six, Let's Dance!

One of the undiscovered gems of Fremont (and Seattle for that matter) is the Fremont Abbey Arts Center. Not only do they offer affordable arts classes throughout the year to youth but open up the Abbey to adult opportunities as well. One of which is The Round that takes place on the first Tuesday of every month. We first discovered this magical gathering of music over two years ago and we are loath to miss even one ever since. more ›

INSIDE OUT: Audiophiles are pedestrian addicts, and we mean that in a nice way, mostly. Though rarely going to destructive lengths for that next sonic fix, there's little they won't do -- if they can afford it -- to reach the upper echelons of high fidelity, surrounding their heads with the newest means in order to pleasure their growing needs. Well, if surround sound is smack, then Tuning the Air is an organic, opium den. Again, in a nice way. Nine acoustic guitarists encircle the small audience, playing off each other and using spatial techniques to titillate the ears of sitting listeners. The group's repertoire includes classical, ambient, rock, and minimalist music. Tonight's performance is the last of the 2010 season. more ›

Bumbershoot: Top Ten Local Acts You've Got To See

Bumbershoot: Top Ten Local Acts You've Got To See

We thought it would be a pretty easy project to sort through the Bumbershoot bill for the top ten local acts. Holy cow, were we wrong! There is an unbelievable list of local bands that you would love. Unfortunately, that would be entirely too work for one weekend. Instead, we took on the monumental task of whittling it down to ten. Understandably, it was pretty difficult. Below are Seattlest's picks for the entire weekend if you are looking for a local music overload. They're listed in order of appearance at the festival. more ›

HEY LADIES: The Fremont Abbey will be hosting a ladies-only Dance Dance Party Party (DDPP) tonight in the church's basement for those who would rather break a sweat to Madonna than go to the gym as usual. Described as a "female-only cult phenomenon," DDPP has no instructors, fitness goals, and absolutely nothing to prove. Damn straight. Expect to do a lot of dance, dance, dancing and have a ton of fun with some fellow ladies bustin' a move to all the usual dance party favorites. more ›

Can't Miss It: Thursday

LOVIN HADESTOWN: Someone once said you can tell a person by the company she keeps. If that were true, we wouldn’t have to hear a note of Anais Mitchell’s music before we decided we liked her. Mitchell’s new album, the music from her folk opera Hadestown, stars Bon Iver, Ani DiFranco, The Haden triplets, and The Low Anthem’s Ben Knox Miller -- a convincing list of guests. Of course kept company counts for only so much, and we sort of have more of a thing for Mitchell’s stellar songwriting style, at times delicate, often strong, and always soulful. She based Hadestown on the story of Orpheus and Eurydice and created a fresh, folksy take on the Greek classic. Mitchell’s a gem, but if you needed more convincing, the excellent Jeffrey Foucalt is on the bill as well. more ›

Making the Holiday Rounds

Making the Holiday Rounds

The Round, which normally takes place at Fremont Abbey, is as much for the performers as the audience, providing established and emerging artists a small stage to cozy up to each other and viewers. Few events qualify as sincerely intimate and art absorbed, but this gathering, simple yet boundless, certainly qualifies. more ›

Dance Dance Party Party Back in Session

Dance Dance Party Party Back in Session

Newsflash: the DDPP Seattle Chapter has not been disbanded, just put on hold while loverly "den momma" Kelly Wiggins ran off to get married! Now she is back, and has her things in order, and the first re-installment of the girls-only, no-holds-barred dance workout class is scheduled for tomorrow night at Fremont Abbey Arts Center. The rules of the class are simple--"No boys, no booze, no judgment"--and what’s left over is a 90-minute open-floor dance class (of sorts) with the DJ spinning and the lights turned low. more ›

FOLK MUSIC GREATNESS: National touring folk music artist Tracy Grammer is in town tonight at the Fremont Abbey, making a rare Seattle appearance with Seattlest's own folk sensation Kim Ruehl. Her voice is distinctive, as is her mastery over the instruments she plays.” more ›

Neighborhood News And Local Blog Round-Up

  • Dan at bigasscity (the blog has returned, thankfully, to its original title) has found Seattle's most embarrassing condo project. "Escala is the love child of pathological excess," he says.
  • Seattle MetBlogs sent a representative to see Mount Eerie at the Fremont Abbey last weekend, and Josh's thoughtful report is in: "Description and structural unpredictability aside, the really certain thing is that however it turns out, it will be its own kind of beautiful."
  • Beacon Hill Blog turned us on to a new blog, BeHi Bonsai; we now have an excellent resource for pictures of weird shrubbery in that neighborhood. So far, this is our favorite.
