Big Brother Wants to Know

Seattlest is shocked, shocked! to read that the freaking Federal Trade Commission plans to investigate bloggers who review and endorse products because (God forbid) they might have actually received those products for free. Duh. We hereby disclose that bloggers regularly get free stuff (tickets, books) in the mail, and we sometimes review the stuff we get (or see or read). Sometimes we like it, sometimes it's crap, and we say so. Why should the FTC give a rat's ass? more ›

Kindle Application Released For iPhone

You no longer have to buy a Kindle or give Amazon.com any money in order to access the bulk of Kindle content and features, thanks to a new application (download here) released by the Seattle-based book giant today which allows you to read, highlight, and bookmark e-books Kindle-style on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Just last month, Seattlest got to handle our first Kindle; its owner had to gently inform us that the first-generation version did not in fact have a touch screen after a full minute of watching our grimy fingers scooting along the surface in vain. If you have one of the old Kindles and don't want to invest in a new one just for the touch screen feature, now you have options. iPhone-owning readers: will you be downloading this app? [MvB: Just did.] more ›

Free Starbucks Coffee, No Vote Required

Starbucks--and Babeland, and Krispy Kreme, and Ben & Jerry's, and Irwin's, and Cupcake Royale, and probably other places we haven't heard about--got a lot of publicity when they offered to give away free coffee to anyone who voted today. (And maybe more Facebook publicity than they hoped for. ) Turns out, though, that bribing rewarding voters with free stuff violates some of those pesky election laws. Never fear, though: You can get a free tall brewed drip coffee at Starbucks just by asking for it, whether you've voted or not. The invaluable Big Blog is staying on top of the status of all those promotions. more ›

He plans to stalk chef Kerry Sear's cooking class at Cascadia on Saturday morning. On Sunday, he'll make is way into SoDo territory where wine writer/wine merchant Rich Kinssies promises to roast a pig and pour samples of Spanish reds at The Wine Outlet . We hope it goes well with the all the uneaten torta. more ›

Free Stuff!

Free Stuff!

Earth Day may be bullshit, but Group Health's Bike Commute Challenge has got some brains behind it. They've realized that asking people to do something good for themselves and/or the environment for just one measly day doesn't do much for either party involved. Participants don't get a longer-term perspective on how their activity of choice might be enjoyable and make them feel better, and one day does not a better environment make, in truth. more ›

Seattlest at Sundance: Final Cut Pro

Seattlest at Sundance: Final Cut Pro

Seattlest had gotten way too accustomed to festival life. Seeing several films a day, taking the occasional break to eat and walk around Main Street, collecting scads of free stuff, sticking around to hear a director speak about his work...it all became the norm. Sadly, it's back to the real world. Thursday was our last day at Sundance. Even though we were downright exhausted, what with all the movies at midnight followed by early AM wake-ups, we were certainly down for a few more days of constant movie-going. It's gonna be tough to get used to not seeing a couple films back to back, leaving a theater to get back in line at that very same theater. Sigh. more ›
