Former Seahawk linebacker Brian Bosworth reportedly rescued a woman from an overturned car outside Winnipeg on Saturday. Bosworth, a former #1 pick overall in the 1988 NFL draft, was in the area on a fishing trip and assisted rescue personnel at the scene. In 2004, ESPN called Bosworth's career the "6th worst flop of the last 25 years."......

For the second time in less than a year, the Seattle Sounders have upset MLS-side Chivas USA in the US Open Cup, defeating the top-flight team 2-0 in last night's third round action at the Starfire Sports Complex in Renton. MLS-bound Sebastien Le Toux and Taylor Graham scored in the contest. The Sounders next face the Kansas City Wizards (another MLS squad) in the quarterfinals at Qwest Field next Tuesday night.......

We were mid-bite on our Bratwurst Sandwich mit Pommes Frittes ($8) when Spain's Fernando Torres scored the sole goal, and we celebrated quietly with a swig of Franziskaner Dunkel Weissbier. A friend of ours whooped and threw her hands up in the air. She suddenly felt very alone, she mentioned later. Not surprisingly, the crowd at Feierabend, the German-style bar down the street from REI, was solidly in Germany's corner. At least we assumed......

SALMAN RUSHDIE: He'll be hitting Town Hall tonight to read from his latest effort, The Enchantress of Florence. According to the press release, it sounds like it's one of those quasi-fictional tales pitting opposites against each other (and, possibly, in the process, showing how opposites attract?). Tickets are available at University Bookstore for $5 a pop, or you can just buy a copy of the novel and use that as your entry. 7:30 p.m.......

Brazil vs. Canada at Qwest Field Soccer Comes to Seattle: Seattlest was lucky enough, to catch the international friendly between Brazil and Canada at Qwest Field Saturday evening. Seeing an explosive game between well-matched teams, from some truly great seats, got us even more excited for the inaugural season of the Seattle Sounders FC. We hope the Sounders inspire a dedicated drum section like the Brazil team brought along. We don't know if we've ever......

NOT REINVENTING THE WHEEL: If you're considering quitting your corporate job--you know, the one with benefits and a customer lunch expense account--to build your own business from the ground up, you're crazy. Have you read the financial pages in the newspapers of late? Sometimes, however, it takes exactly that edge of craziness to make your dreams come true. In that case, let us direct you to the Six Hour Start-Up Conference this weekend. Your bucks......

Seattle's new Major League Soccer team, Seattle Sounders FC, has signed its first player: Sebastien Le Toux. Le Toux, a 24 year old French national, is a forward. He's not Thierry Henry, but he is a start! Le Toux is not unknown to Sounders staff or fans, he is a member of the current Seattle Sounders team in the United Soccer League, where he has excelled. Every whisper of a new player, and now......

Sports fans around the city are saying goodbye to Shaun Alexander. The former NFL MVP was released by the Seahawks following eight seasons. Now, we may be saying good-bye to Safeco Field. Liberty Mutual’s purchase of Safeco might mean a new name for the city’s baseball stadium. San Francisco’s baseball stadium opened up a few months after Safeco, and was originally named Pac Bell for the phone company Pacific Bell, a few years late......

For those of you that are info Top Chef, you can check out the full review of last night's episode on Chicagoist. We were excited to see that beer had the spotlight for part of the show, but it was sad to see it was done in such a sell-out, corporate fashion. Check out the embedded clip for the ten-minute Quickfire Challenge (you can forward to the 3:45 mark). The chefs were challenged to......

Seattleites and soccer fans alike are abuzz at the possibility of Seattle's yet-to-be-named Major League Soccer team being led by one of international soccer's biggest stars. Thierry Henry is an international sensation, having played for the World Cup-winning French national team and a number of Europe's best professional teams (including Arsenal and FC Barcelona). Speculation that Henry might be making his way to Seattle lit up sports blogs last month. A number of sites......

Last week we were taking Husky football with a friend who was upset that the University hadn't fired coach Ty Willingham. We mentioned that, though he hadn't won many games, Willingham had restored integrity to the football program. She was unmoved. "The university does a lot of good," she said. "The football team's job is to win games." But now our friend has read the Seattle Times' stomach-turning series about the alleged rape, attempted murder,......

In a press conference that's going on right now, Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren announced that 2008 will be his final year as head coach of the Seahawks. Holmgren is not retiring. He did not rule out returning to coaching in the future, but did say he would "take a break." He said he would leave the issue of who would succeed him as coach up to the Seahawks front office, saying "it wouldn't be appropriate"......

Both the P-I and TNT report that Mike Holmgren will return as coach of the Seahawks. The P-I's Clare Farnsworth writes that "a source close to the situation" confirms that Holmgren will return. We say hooray! Holmgren is by far the most successful coach in team history. There are a few things we wish he'd do better, but when it comes to the big stuff--having the respect of his players, keeping his team motivated, and,......

Frank Hughes of the Tacoma News-Tribune reports that Mike Holmgren will announce whether he's going to remain as Seahawks coach, retire, or what, this afternoon. Over the weekend Hawks assistant coach Jim Mora withdrew his name from consideration for the Washington Redskins coaching job, despite being the 'Skins top candidate. This has led to speculation that Mora withdrew his name because he'd been promised Holmgren was retiring and that he'd get the Hawks job.......

To catch you up: Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo spent last week in Mexico with new girlfriend Jessica Simpson. Many Cowboys fans were miffed, thinking that he should've been preparing for yesterday's playoff game against New York (which the Cowboys lost). The New York Post had a bit of fun with the kerfuffle, hiring a Jessica Simpson impersonator to roam around the stadium during the game. Their impersonator was Lynsey Nordstrom, who they identify as......

It struck us halfway through Green Bay's 5th straight drive for a touchdown that Brett Favre's performance in this game was a lot like Roger Clemens' one-hit performance against the Mariners in the 2000 ALCS. When faced with a Hall-of-Famer at his best, what can you do? Favre was 18-23, throwing pinpoint pass after pinpoint pass: timing routes, hitting guys in stride, and, in the highlight that will come to represent this game, breaking out......

We've been reading and rereading Hawks/Packers stuff all week. Here the few things we think are important about Saturday's game: 1) The Hawks' Patrick Kerney made the Pro Bowl this year for terrorizing quarterbacks, but he may not be much of a factor in this game. The Packers gave up the fewest sacks of any NFL team--not because they have a terrific offensive line, but because they designed their offense that way. Brett Favre often......

Is there drama in Saturday's NFC divisional playoff game between the Hawks and Packers? Well, the playoffs are always dramatic. But this game packs (ha!) even more of a theatrical punch. He got the Packers to two Super Bowls, winning one--their first championship since the departure of legendary coach Vince Lombardi. There's a street named......

For the second year in a row, a legendary coach has ended his career with a loss at Qwest Field. Last year, it was Bill Parcells who, though he's taken over as a GM in Miami, claims his final game as coach was last year's Cowboys playoff loss at Seattle. This year, it's Joe Gibbs, who resigned this morning, three days after his Redskins lost to the Hawks at Qwest. Other coaching legends who saw......

Not sure we've ever seen a win for which the credit belongs so overwhelmingly to the defense. For most of the game, the Seahawks' defensive line was able to get pressure with only four rushers. By establishing that, they were able to drop guys back into coverage, which led to the two pick sixes. The offense? The special teams? Not so great. But let's enjoy this one for now, shall we? Here's the scene at......

If you're wondering what happens to the lesser-known bands who used to play Seattle at the Croc, evidence from the sports world shows that you ought to look for them in Kent. Or not at all. As you read, those Seattlests who do follow music weren't too concerned about losing the Croc. Neumos and Chop Suey are the places to go--they book well-known bands (well-known to music types, at least). The Croc booked lesser-known bands,......
