Extra, Extra: Fences Cancels on City Arts, O'Brien Cancels on B of A
Mike O'Brien does a tiny thing and we all get excited, Fences does a huge thing and probably pisses off a lot of people, Edmonds gets a Dick's (finally!), and a shitty thing happens in Aberdeen. A typical Friday, wouldn't you say?
Can't Miss It: Tuesday
Tonight: karaoke + cake, deeply emotional bad-boys, and eating for a good cause.
Gallery: Campfire OK and Fences Made for a Great Lineup Saturday @ Neumos
Saturday promised to be another great night of local music. We started off in the Moe Bar to check out their live streaming of Coachella on the big screens. We were tempted to just hang out there and drink all night watching that instead, but we realized what we'd be missing and changed our minds.
Countdown in Photos: Day 13
Seattlest will be counting down to 2011 with a series of posts on our highlights of this year and what we're looking forward to in the next. Got a list to suggest? Send it our way. See the entire series here.
Halloween Shows You Don't Want to Miss
The shows we're talking about may not be ghoulish or involve (much) candy, but you'll be talking about it Monday morning at work anyway. Columbia City Theater is putting on a hell of a Halloween weekend of shows that you'd be a fool to miss out on.
Champagne Champagne at CMJ? That's News to Them.
A few days ago we were so excited to see that Champagne Champagne were in the top 30 acts called out by Spin Magazine that would be appearing at CMJ's Music Marathon this year. CMJ is the College Music Journal, a great source for catching up on signed and unsigned bands alike. They have been producing this festival for three decades and as such has become one of the major music festivals to attend, along the lines of SXSW, Bumbershoot, and Lollapalooza. While Champ Champ has been getting a lot of buzz, we were surprised to see them so prominently plastered in the Spin article and that they were performing at this weekend's fest at all.
Bumbershoot: Top Ten Local Acts You've Got To See
We thought it would be a pretty easy project to sort through the Bumbershoot bill for the top ten local acts. Holy cow, were we wrong! There is an unbelievable list of local bands that you would love. Unfortunately, that would be entirely too work for one weekend. Instead, we took on the monumental task of whittling it down to ten. Understandably, it was pretty difficult. Below are Seattlest's picks for the entire weekend if you are looking for a local music overload. They're listed in order of appearance at the festival.
Friendly Folk-Pop for the Kids: Hey Marseilles at Vera This Saturday
Before the seasons changed and our rain-induced pseudo-hibernation began, we were able to gather up many fond musical memories during festival season. During one such venture we were able to talk to Hey Marseilles and Fences as part of our Better Know a CHBP Band series. As luck has it the two bands will be playing the Vera Project this Saturday. (Tickets $10, all ages, 7:30 PM)
Better Know a CHBP Band: Hey Marseilles, Fences, and The Lonely Forest
Fans of thoughtful, melodic and occasionally melodramatic rock, fear not. There is a place for you at Capitol Hill Block Party as well! With the third and final part of our "Better Know a CHBP Band" series, we present Hey Marseilles, Fences, and The Lonely Forest. The last three bands of our local spotlight are among some of your best bets for heartfelt tunes that may or may not tug at your heartstrings. Regardless of what musical choices you make on the ground, with 45 acts to choose from, you’re bound to find something that will please your ears.
Can't Miss It: Wednesday
IN FULL GIAMATTIVISION: Cold Souls is the too-grimly titled existential comedy starring Paul Giamatti as Paul Giamatti. While rehearsing Uncle Vanya, Giamatti begins to lose himself in his character's depression, and looking for a temporary fix, stumbles across the new process of "soul extraction," as detailed in the New Yorker. While the movie is deadpan, Giamatti is not. His off-kilter spiral into soullessness is by turns hilarious and touching.
