It's not hyperbole to say that Broken Social Scene is one of the best bands making music today; if anything, it's an underestimation to refer to them as a mere "band." Instead, they're a Toronto-based collective of musicians with prodigious output, both together and separately, with related bands including Feist, Stars, Metric, Apostle of Hustle, and Do Make Say Think. Since their 2005 self-titled release, Broken Social Scene hasn't made any new albums as a band, but have instead released solo efforts with full band support. The latest in the Broken Social Scene Presents... series is from BSS bassist Brendan Canning. We spoke with him last week in advance of the Broken Social Scene show tonight at the Showbox SoDo, where you can expect to hear his songs, as well as those from the band proper. Sorry suckers, it's sold out.

It’s one of those Sunday mornings where the air is very still and heavy, and the dim light is giving you plenty of room to recover from Saturday night. For us, it’s the perfect time to visit the newest Victrola Coffee location on Pike Street.

Inside the Paramount Theater, we found our seats near the front and we waited. In the weeks and days leading up to this show, we'd scoured the web, made a few calls, looked for hints in recent reviews from other cities. Nothing. We had no idea who the opening performer was. It was to be a mystery. The lights came down, the applause came up and a man entered the stage. He was alone, save...

If you've never had the chance to see Broken Social Scene together, you've at least had, or have, ample opportunity to see current and former members roll through town during October/November. Last month, it was Metric (with BSS alumni Emily Haines and James Shaw), then Mr. BSS himself, Kevin Drew. Next week, Stars (with BSS alumi Millan, Cranley and Campbell ) come to the Showbox.

Don't get Seattlest wrong; we had a great time all weekend at Bumbershoot. How could we not love the mountains of garlic fries bigger than our heads? The sweaty, pimply teenage boys with their curly shagged hairdos and their overly made-up girlfriends in message t-shirts? Most importantly, and less sarcastically, how could we not get super psyched about a weekend of rainless weather in Seattle and an opportunity to discover loads of local talent about which we had previously been unaware? We couldn't! That's why we spent the whole damned weekend putting up with the sweaty, stale beer stench and the long bathroom lines. Because we heart seriously good music.

What a great way to close out the summer: Beer, fried food on stick, irritatingly large crowds, great music, and a slight chance of rain (remember last year?). Seattlest loves us some Bumbershoot though, and we wouldn't let some pesky weather ruin our fun. This year looks to be a good one. A couple things we are digging right off the bat are the addition of good bands on the outdoor stages and ditching the Friday festivities before the weekend (we never went on that day anyway).

Decisions, decisions. This member of Seattlest will have a good friend in town for the duration of Bumbershoot weekend, so most of our scheduling will depend on him. Good thing our friends tend to have taste. Present company excluded.

This has been a busy week, at least in terms of announcements as to who's involved in things taking place sometime in the future. Seattlest breaks it down:

Seattlest serves up musical jambalaya for the masses… Delicious!
