- Out of the gate from the 12 post position, Assessment (6-1) won Sunday's 74th running of the Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs. The top race brought in $796,268 worth of wagers, a single-race record.
- Finally, the Woodland Park Zoo's male snow leopard has a name: Gobi. Regardless of what 35,000 people wanted, we still think a Thundercats-inspired name would have been so much cooler.
Neighborhood News and Local Blog Round-Up
Can't Miss It: Tuesday
BEST OF BASS: Did you miss the Decibel Festival? Despite urgings from Seattlest Donte, DJ Riz and others, we did in fact miss said musical electro-fest last time around. Micro Decibel Festival is our chance and yours to make good. Jesse Rose, KiloWatts outta Philly and Deru are performing tonight, and you should be there.
This Must Be the Change We Were Expecting
The CDN on CNN? The Central District News blog got a chance to describe Seattle and the neighborhood for CNN; it's a good read--almost as if Scott spent more time on this article than on a typical blog post. (We kid because we love!) Scott suggests a unique tour guide for the CD: "A good way to tour the neighborhood is to load up your iPod with Sir Mix-A-Lot's 'Posse on Broadway' and follow the streets as they're called out in the song. And don't forget to grab a box of delicious Ezell's Fried Chicken -- they say Oprah loves it!" Of course, he also gives pointers on the weather: "Some seasons are wetter than others around here. To guarantee a damp experience, your best bet would be to plan your travels for sometime in the narrow window between late October and the 4th of July."
12th Healthiest State and Getting Fatter All the Time
According to the recently released "F as in Fat" report, almost 25% of Washington residents are obese. However, according to another recently released study, we are also the 12th healthiest state in the nation overall. Despite 24.5% of the state's population being considered obese, Washington is only the 32nd most obese state in the country. Surprising no one, Mississippi is the most overweight state in the country (can you say fried everything?) and Colorado is the trimmest. The dueling reports make us want to go for a jog, with a stop at Ezell's on the route home.
Get Out: Of Town. No, Seriously
When even a convent in Olympia began to seem expensive (egads), Seattlest settled for a trip to the mysterious region called "unincorporated Snohomish County," also known as "our parents' house." We would take a vacation, damnit, even if that meant a weekend of sitting in our high school bedroom-turned-guest-room, noshing on Trader Joe's brie, and contemplating the tiny nature reserve just beyond the rows of strawberry plants in the back yard.
Ezell's Targeted by Repeat Burglaries
Ezell's Famous Chicken, a Seattle institution of deep-fried goodness, has been victim to a number of burglaries in the past six months. The most recent burglary happened this Saturday and was caught on surveillance cameras. The grainy footage shows a man breaking in through a side-window of the restaurant early Saturday morning after Ezell's closed for business.
