We've been following the Dead Prez/Evergreen State College story here, here, and definitely here in our search to understand what actually happened after that hip hop concert. It certainly was not the beginning of a revolution, as Evergreen students have been protesting anything and everything since time began; it also wasn't The Man reenacting Tien'anmen Square. Ultimately, it sounds like a case of overreaction on both sides, magnified by the strange jelly of tension that's......

Photo Taken by beloved Flickr Contributor, Slightly North Ever wonder how many tree-hugging hippie college students it takes to flip over a police car? Students at Evergreen State College in Olympia learned today, as a riotous mob broke out shortly after a Dead Prez concert on campus. Apparently there was a bit of a scuffle during the Dead Prez set, and campus officers stepped in to arrest a student for misdemeanor assault. After some......

From the buzz circulating the budding career of Josh Blue, we thought his Saturday evening performance at the Kirkland Performance Center would be full of self-deprecating and occasionally awkward humor. It was not. Let’s start with the facts. Blue has Cerebral Palsy. He is a stand-up comedian. He is funny - no, he is hilarious. He is a Nike-sponsored striker for the U.S. Paralympic soccer team. Finally, he feels compelled to use anything with......

Evergreen State College alumni and fourth-season winner of Last Comic Standing, Josh Blue is coming to the Kirkland Performance Center (KPC) this Saturday. We're looking forward to an evening of self-deprecating humor, as Blue’s comedy stems from his personal experiences of living with cerebral palsy. Blue hopes to dispel stereotypical myths about the "disabled" through stand-up comedy and what he calls "reverse teasing." (His comedy routine is not recommended for children under 16 years old,......

Kakuta Hamisi, a member of the Maasai tribe of Kenya, is working over the summer at the Woodland Park Zoo, talking to zoo visitors about Maasai culture and conservation. Hamisi, an Evergreen State grad, evidently likes his job--he recruited several members of his tribe to work with him. But Catherine Claiborne, a grad student at UW's Evans School, has a message for Hamisi: You are being exploited. She tells the Times that the exhibit could......

Now that the UW finally picked a commencement speaker (they settled on Congressman Norm Dicks after Doug E. Doug cancelled), we've compiled this list of 2007 grad day yakkers at all local colleges (source: The Chronicle of Higher Education). Please let us know if we're wrong or if we left anyone out. Local colleges Bastyr College: Joycelyn Elders, masturbation proponent City University of Seattle: James Donaldson, ex-NBA player Evergreen State College: Maxine Mimms, education expert......

Writing on The New Republic Online in November, 2006, James Kirchick snarkily commented, "Of all the subjects for a 90-minute, one-woman show, Rachel Corrie ought to have been at the bottom of the list." Rachel Corrie was an Olympia native and Evergreen State......

Strapped for reading material at a Dairy Queen this weekend, Seattlest picked up a guide to the Evergreen State Fair. An article touting the benefits of taking transit to the fair caught our eye. "Good sign," we thought. "Transit options up north!" But here's how they're selling it: You can get $1 off your weekend fair admission. A $1 coupon is available in the fair bus schedule... Ooh! Sounds good! $1 off! Bus fare......

Governor Gregoire, apparently unaware that her job could be taken from her in two and a half years, is leaving it up the state's National Guardsmen whether they want to patrol the US-Mexico border. President Bush is sending 6,000 National Guard members to the Southern border to end the problem of people entering the country illegally. Showing the kind of bold decision-making that caused her to get outpolled by John "My position on the war......

We always try to listen to Don Slack's Swingin' Doors show on KEXP. If we aren't in the car when it's live (6-9pm on Thursdays), we catch the replay on KEXP's streaming archive. On last week's show, DJ Don played a fast Western-swing song with a great melody, "Banks of the Brazos" by James Hand. (You can hear it if you set the streaming archive to start at 6:45pm, or hear a snippet here). The......

but did you know Cornel West busts some rhymes? Back in the day, we turned to books for West’s philosophizing. But now we can just download it, in hip-hop form. What a difference a decade makes! Even though we didn’t actually read every single thing on the syllabus (and got our cultural studies degree anyway —suckers!) we did spend some QT with CW. "Race Matters," my brothers and sisters. But does West matter anymore? Apparently,......

Seattlest went to school in Olympia (for awhile, anyway, with apologies to Courtney Love) and we more or less recall the political foment of The Evergreen State College, the lo-pro, no-letter-grades hothouse that produced Rachel Corrie, the student-activist who was killed when she was struck by bulldozer in Gaza three years ago today. Mistake or murder? Martyred activist or hippie fool? Was she killed by Israel, or sacrificed for the cause by the International Solidarity......

Consider “The Other Washington”… Which one is it? Well, it’s a matter of perspective. For most of us Northwesterners, the phrase refers to our nation’s capitol, as in “those fat-cat politicos in the other Washington.” For much of the rest of the country, it refers to our fair state. (If memory serves, the tourism board had a slogan in the ‘80s, along the lines of “Visit America’s other Washington -- the state!”) This slight......

We’ve always been intrigued by corn mazes -- especially since, if memory serves, one was once made out of Ichiro’s face -- but we’ve never tried one ourselves. So we recently spent an autumn afternoon in the Snohomish River Valley, about a 35-mile drive north of Seattle, visiting “Washington’s Largest Corn Maze”. It’s actually a 12-acre stand shaped like the Evergreen State, roughly 1/3,802,827th the size. The corn maze quickly proved itself more of a......

Tonight at 7 pm, NCAA basketball teams may begin practicing. Many teams will celebrate the advent of a new season with "Midnight Madness"--an evening practice (often with dunk contests and other crowd-pleasing antics) that fans can view for free. Until this year, teams couldn't practice until midnight, hence the name. But the Washington Huskies men's basketballers intend no such shenanigans. They are in Olympia, at Evergreen State College, having practices that are closed to fans......
