Natural Gas Leak on Terry Avenue, Downtown

As of 1:57 p.m., five emergency units started rolling to 1823 Terry Avenue to deal with a natural gas leak. A tipster says nearby buildings are being evacuated, so they must not have gotten it dealt with yet. If you're in the area, don't smoke! UPDATE: We hear they haven't managed to get the gas line shut off yet, so this may take a while. Sounds like Stewart is closed between 9th and Boren. UPDATE: And they're un-evacuating. Whew! However, the street is still closed, and emergency crews are still bustling about. UPDATE: Stewart is open again!

Yikes--the 6,000 Orting, Wash., and 20,000 Orting Valley residents have been asked via reverse-911 systems to leave their homes and find higher ground this afternoon. Tomorrow, Orting may be underwater. According to Lights & Sirens, Orting hasn't been evacuated like this in twenty-two years. Because the flooding situation is so dangerous, sandbag operations to try to alleviate the damage have ceased and most schools in the area have closed early. Good luck and godspeed to our brave neighbors in Pierce County.

The Seattle Police Department gave residents of Nickelsville a 20-minute warning at 12:15 p.m. to vacate their encampment or face arrest. As of 12:35 p.m., the homeless residents of Nickelsville were officially considered criminal trespassers and subject to arrest. According to reports, some campers have chosen to follow orders while others have decided to stay and face charges. Sadly, at least those who stay at Nickelsville against orders are more likely to have a roof over their head tonight in jail than those who chose to comply.

Seattle City Hall was evacuated this morning because of a minor fire. A fluorescent light on the second floor caught on fire, causing embers to shower on nearby desks. City Hall employees tried to quell the fire with an extinguisher to no avail, so firefighters were called. This is the first fire in the new City Hall building, there was no damage reported. Employees returned to business as usual after a 20 minute evacuation, hopefully getting right back to the really important things, like naked swimmers using public pools and approving more condos.

Alaska's struggles continued today, when a plane had to be evacuated due to smoke in the cockpit. This also resulted in the day's unintentionally funny headline (courtesy of the Seattle P-I): "Alaska Airlines 737 evacuated on landing." While "evacuated" wouldn't be the verb you'd usually use, getting off the plane after it lands is pretty much standard operating procedure.
