It seems like forever ago that Sunday Suppers were all the rage, and their popularity has definitely subsided since then. But recently, we've noticed them creeping back into the culinary community--and we welcome their return.
Ethan Stowell's Sunday Suppers are Cooking with Gas
Can't Miss It: Sunday
We know everyone is all booked up with Halloween Madness but if you've got some spare time as the weekend comes to a close -- don't know what to do with it -- don't miss all that Seattle has to offer on this blustery autumn day.
James Beard: Seattle Gets The Shaft
Yesterday afternoon, the Seattle food scene had their eyes on the live streaming of the esteemed James Beard Awards in New York City. Twitter waves full of live tweeting. Attendees in the midst representing Seattle: Angela & Ethan Stowell, Nancy Leson, Brian Canlis, Leslie Kelly, Matt Dillon and a few others.
More Details on Kylen McCarthy's Marjorie Departure
A few days ago we posted some news so baffling that we had to double check the calendar to confirm it was not yet April Fool's. Marjorie chef Kylen McCarthy has departed the Capitol Hill kitchen and is working as a server at Ethan Stowell's How to Cook a Wolf.
Pigging Out at Cochon555
Last night's Cochon555 brought together pig evangelists, butchers, winemakers and a large crowd of food lovers. Attendees feasted on the culinary delights from the five esteemed chefs while drinking Washington and Oregon wines. Those with iron-clad stomachs who stuck it out til the end were treated to chicharrones dipped in chocolate while John Sundstrom of Lark and Licorous was crowned the king of porcine for the second year in a row. His most notable bite: pork and shrimp sausage on a bed of pickled cucumber, plated in a trio along with pork belly on rice and a perfectly executed rillette.
Recipe: Ethan Stowell's Braised Pork Jowls
As a follow-up to our conversation with chef Ethan Stowell, the recently James Beard Award "long-listed" chef has shared with us a recipe from his cookbook (see our review here).
A Conversation With Ethan Stowell: Cochon 555
This week, Seattlest had the opportunity to talk to Ethan Stowell, one of the five participating chefs about Cochon 555 and heritage breeds of pork. Stowell dishes on the importance of nose-to-tail, the McRib sandwich and his pick for Sunday's porkfest.
Safeco Field Gets Concessions From Ethan Stowell
Last year the big food news out of Safeco Field was the addition of poutine. This year, the facility is bringing in local chef-about-town Ethan Stowell and two other non-local chefs with some culinary bona fides to further upgrade Seattle's ballpark food.
Tailgating Competition in Seattle Tomorrow, Move Over Guy Fieri!
This Sunday Sunday Sunday! It's a tailgating extravaganza the likes of which you've never seen. Starting at 10:30 am the North parking lot of Qwest Field will be filled with Seahawks fans, but more importantly it will be filled with tailgating fans. Little did we know that there is a competition hosted by Bing for best tailgater in the nation, but apparently Seattle is hosting one of the regional competitions. You may be asking yourself, what does a tailgating competition entail. Well, we're wondering the same thing to be perfectly honest. It looks to have four categories: Cooking (of course), Team Spirit, Trivia, and Parking Lot Athletics. That last one has us most intrigued and excited about this competition. Though, the cooking portion doesn't sound like a chore to watch either; hopefully they'll be offering up samples!
Cookbook Review & Author Appearances: Ethan Stowell's New Italian Kitchen
The omnipresent Seattle chef didn't write a cookbook for amateurs. But then if you want some recipes that draw from what's lying around in your fridge, there's always Cookin' with Coolio.
Seattlest Dines: Staple & Fancy Mercantile
Yes, there is a regular a la carte menu at Staple & Fancy Mercantile, Ethan Stowell's new spot in Ballard's renovated Kolstrand Building (also home to newcomer The Walrus & the Carpenter). But we say you're a fool if you pass up the four-course $45 chef's choice meal, served family style. It's a tremendous value for a hit parade of dishes not on the regular list.
Three Local Chefs Among James Beard Award Finalists
Seattlest sends congratulations to our local chefs for being named finalists for James Beard Foundation awards for 2010.
Ethan Stowell: Will Cook for Corks
Not that we need an excuse to dine at any of Ethan Stowell's restaurants--hello, How to Cook a Wolf--but unloading our cork collection in the name of the environment and a newsworthy discount is as good as any. From November 1-December 31, pack your pockets and purses with corks to dine at any Ethan Stowell restaurant and receive one dollar off your check for every cork, up to 25.
What's Cookin': A Chance to Sup with Ethan Stowell
Okay. Maybe it was a little unfair of us to tease a dinner that the James Beard nominees for Best Chef Northwest, including Ethan Stowell, were preparing for a private little group of food writers. (Stowell sent out plates of six Shigoku oysters topped with uni--and that was per person, after amazing appetizers and with five courses to follow!) Actually, we had promised tweets so you could follow the Twitter dinner, but the technology failed.
Tonight, a Twitter Dinner with James Beard Nominees
As we mentioned on Friday, we've got a dinner invitation of sorts for you tonight.
Dishin': Rocky Mountain Oyster Sorbet at Harvest Vine
Chef Joseba Jiménez de Jiménez delivers dessert: Rocky Mountain oyster sorbet with chocolate sorbet, lemon foam, and sweet skin from pig feet. Then he steps back and waits for a reaction.
Seattle Chefs are Stars in this Season of Awards
The stars were out last night in Seattle. The Rising Stars, that is.
Capitol Hill Restaurant Roundup
Lots going on atop Cap Hill, not the least of which is Ethan Stowell's latest, Anchovies & Olives, opening tonight. We'll get there soon enough. It's the most recent example of awkward timing: restaurants opening in the teeth of the downturn. Chew well.
James Beard Nominations
Just announced, the 2008 James Beard award nominations and Seattle does just fine, thank you. Tom Douglas, left, is one of five nominees for outstanding restaurateur in America; Canlis a nominee for best restaurant service, and four Seattle chefs in the running for "Best Northwest Chef:" Maria Hines, center (Tilth), Holly Smith (Cafe Juanita), Ethan Stowell, right (Union) and Jason Wilson (Crush). Winners to be announced early June.
What’s Cookin’: Crave’s Copper Cure
Comfort is a two-way street. Sometimes we need comfort. And sometimes we give it.
Eatin' in the 'hood
What fun! Another restaurant promotion! This one's called New Urban Eats, and it features 20 relatively new places offering three-course dinners for thirty bucks. Sunday through Thursday, throughout May except (wonder why?) Mother's Day...the one day nobody should eat out but everybody does.
Motion To Table
There's no sign outside, no street number, just a Vespa on the sidewalk below a fluttering Italian flag. Welcome to Tavolata, the long-awaited Belltown outpost of Union's Ethan Stowell and business partner Patric Gabre-Kidan. Neither has clogs-at-the-forno experience in Italy, but that didn't stop them from creating an upscale, "modern Italian" restaurant in Belltown.
