We're getting a new Major League Soccer team and everyone either is or should be excited. Drew Carey's walking around town, season tickets are flying off the shelves and the MLS Cup is approaching this weekend. On the field Houston faces New England, but there's sure to be a lot of talk during the broadcast about Seattle, our new team and the interesting ideas that have been associated with it. Unfortunately, no one in Seattle will see that broadcast. KOMO won't be showing it. A reader figured out it wasn't on KOMO's schedule and sent them an email. Here's what he got in return:
No MLS Cup for Seattle
Get Out: Buckley Log Show
If you need to experience an entirely different kind of pride, head over to Buckley, WA (near Enumclaw) for the second day of the annual Buckley Log Show. If you're like us, you won't know what most of the events actually are, but you've no doubt passed these kinds of competitions on ESPN2, as lumberjacks go head to head to slice, chop, and climb. It's loud and a bit disorienting, but there's something refreshing in knowing that you can end up a world away after less than an hour's drive. And if you're counting the days until the Puyallup Fair, know that the Buckley Log Show has the same scones (although the jam isn't quite as good).
Husky Women Can Shock the World Tonight
On Saturday, in their first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 2001, the Husky women won a thriller, beating Minnesota thanks to some gutsy rebounding, timely shooting, and hopelessly incompetent Gopher coaching.
Huskies Advance to 2nd Round
Brandon Roy carried the Huskies to yet another win last night. His 28 points led the Dawgs over Utah State in the first round of the tournament, and his double jab step, rise and shoot three late in the game was the nail in the Aggies' coffin.
Latest Basketball Rankings Are Biased
In a clear case of East Coast bias among national basketball writers, the University of Washington did not acheive top 25 status in the latest AP women's basketball poll, despite having beaten #23 Utah and #14 Stanford.
UW Volleyball Plays for National Championship Saturday
With a win over Tennessee yesterday, the 31-1 University of Washington women's volleyball team advanced to the national championship game. They play #1 ranked Nebraska Saturday at 3pm. ESPN2 will televise the game live.
Seattle Represented in World Series
While soccer, hockey and a handful of other second-tier sports have been fighting to get themselves into your living room for over a decade, a few activities have managed to make the jump recently. Witness NASCAR, golf, and poker. Poker! It's on the TV nonstop and while some of us are looking forward to the day it gets its own cable channel (thereby getting the hell off ESPN2) others of us are apparently pretty into it. Regardless, it's World Series of Poker time.
