Friday afternoon ushered in a host of famous faces including actors Laz Alonso and Giovanni Ribisi on a blue carpet press event. The following day, the EMP hosted back-to-back panels with the celebrities, beginning with a look at the actors' experiences on the set of Avatar, and wrapping up with a discussion with the digital effects team on the creation of the virtual world of Pandora. Can't Miss It: The Weekend

DON'T MESS: You may remember us talking a while back about local drum crew Titanium Sporkestra raising money to travel to Austin for HonkTx. Congratulations are due, because they made their nut and then some. This Saturday, they give their thanks with a BBQ cook-out and performance buffet of Seattle's best warped entertainers. God's Favorite Beefcake. The Mongrel Jews. The Harlequin Hipsters. And, for taste, San Fran's Esmerelda Strange. It's going to be a wondrous evening of temptation. Go ahead and fill your plate. BIG TRIMPIN: In 2009, Seattle artists (Gerhard) Trimpin received the documentary treatment with Trimpin: the sound of invention. The film by Peter Esmonde profiles the life and work of the somewhat elusive artist. Highly regarded as an inventor, sculptor and noise artist, Trimpin gives music physical form with his awe-inspiring, kinetic installations, such as "If VI Was IX: Roots and Branches" at the EMP, a 40 foot tall creation made of over 500 instruments on the top of which a collection of computer programmed instruments play live music on cue. The film also features music from the wonderful Kronos Quartet. more ›

Today's Final Farewell Honoring The King Of Pop

Today's Final Farewell Honoring The King Of Pop

It was thirteen days ago Seattle and the rest of the world learned about the passing of one of the most iconic entertainers, Michael Jackson. And since then we've been on serious MJ overload. Now in a fitting final star-studded tribute, the King of Pop's memorial service will take place today in Los Angeles. The event itself, planned to attract millions worldwide will also be broadcasting here in Seattle at the Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum's JBL Theater from 10-11:30 a.m., which will be free for fans to come watch and pay their final respects. more ›

Gates Foundation HQ Breaks Ground

The new $500 million headquarters for The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation broke ground today on lower Queen Anne. The foundation headquarters take up an entire city block, across the street from the Seattle Center and his Microsoft buddy Paul Allen's pet project, the EMP. The planned campus will be 90,000 square feet and include offices for 1,200 employees as well as an interactive museum. Sadly there is no word if there will be a Batman-style signal for Bill Gates and the foundation. (A new economy is struggling? A library needs new computers? You want to talk about health care in Africa? Just flash the Gates Foundation signal!) The Gates foundation hopes to move into their new headquarters, with or without our super hero signal idea, in 2010. more ›

What The EMP Pop Conference Taught Us

What The EMP Pop Conference Taught Us

The most important thing we brought away from the EMP Pop Conference was the name Labi Siffre, along with a link to the English musician's blog, Into The Light. This was the fruit of a moving, well-researched presentation from Charles Aaron, music editor at Spin, and we can't wait to dive deeper into Siffre's poetry and musical catalog from the 70s and 80s. Aside from that presentation and a few from the "Liminal Soul" panel, we were underwhelmed by the Conference. more ›
