A couple of items get a little bit closer to reaching a ballot in 2012 -- but one's a lot further along. Meanwhile, Occupy Bellingham is evicted, business owners prepare for the minimum wage increase and an arrest in the Christmas Eve murder of a Woodinville teacher.
Thursday Morning Headlines
Increased DUI Patrols on the Way for Washington State Drivers
'Tis the season to be ticketed for driving drunk. So, you know, just don't do it.
Drive Hammered, Get Nailed: Extra DUI Patrols Start This Weekend
Drunk driving is douchey and dangerous. And also, really expensive if you get caught. Which you probably will, because there are going to be additional officers out there, looking for you. So don't do it!
Tulalip: The Number One Place for DUIs
We're irritated enough about people who were too cheap to fork over the cash for a hotel room or cab fare home after drinking that next year, we might resort to shooting drunk people's cars with paintballs, like this guy from Kennewick did. Kennewick Man did end up going to jail for his creative problem-solving, though, so paintballs might not be the best course of action after all. Please drive safely, city. Driving drunk isn't worth the risk.
Gas Leak On Highway 164
One of the most important lessons we learned in Driver's Ed was: "Avoid breaking natural gas lines; it won't be pretty should you happen to crash into one." Early this morning, around 4:20 a.m., a 19-year-old female in a pick-up truck drove into such a gas line on Highway 164 by SE 380th (out by Auburn). The highway is currently closed (good morning, traffic!), and KOMO says the driver is being investigated for drunk driving. If she was driving inebriated, the woman forgot the other most important lesson we learned in Driver's Ed: "Sleep in your car, goddammit. Driving drunk is not okay." Seattlest hopes everything works out for the driver and for Highway 164, which does see a lot of traffic. It would be a pain if WSDOT had to keep it shut down much longer for repairs.
Belltown Babylon or Belltown Gomorrah?
Robert L. Jamieson has a big, big problem with the way things are down in Belltown and a pretty strong idea of who's to blame:
Arrest Me, Please
This is a new one. Instead of fleeing arrest, a Moses Lake man crashed his car into a police parking lot gate to guarantee his arrest would happen. Officers inside the station heard the impact of the crash and responded immediately (very easy to do when it involves getting up and walking outside).
The Fluorescent Letter?
Is Washington State thinking of creating a modern day scarlet letter? Republican State Senator Mike Carrell has authored a bill that would require a person convicted of a DUI to have special fluorescent yellow license plates. If passed, the law would require anyone convicted of a DUI to have the plates for one year on both the front and back plates of their vehicles. Within that year, if a driver convicted of a DUI is pulled over for any reason and they do not have the required fluorescent plates, they could be charged with an extra misdemeanor.
Seattle Taxi Service Available Online
What is it about Seattle and innovative cabbies? It was a cabbie who co-came-up-with the idea for the monorail (along with a poet), and now we've got a cabbie jumping into the digital age: along with books, mp3s and pornography, you can now shop for cabs .
Local Man Hates His Friends
You are the unidentifed man who rescue teams spent Sunday night looking for on Stevens Pass until they found him at a friend's place in Issaquah.
