Driving While Old: Congressional Bill to Make Roads Safer for the Elderly

Driving While Old: Congressional Bill to Make Roads Safer for the Elderly

Last week, the Times reported that, according to the Census, the Baby Boomer generation is getting old. And while this is certainly not news, the implications of it do merit discussion and, it seems, legislation. more ›

Cliff Mass to Rainy Day Drivers: "Let's Be Careful Out There"

It's the first day of real rain after a loooooooooong dry spell, and UW weather sage Cliff Mass says: Watch out! "During the dry period oil, dust and other debris collect on roadways and the addition of water produces a slippery emulsion." It certainly does, and you notice it taking the corners, or on a hill. That said, at the moment traffic flow looks pretty good. more ›

Fast Cars Don't Swim: Porsche Crashes into Sound

The lead-footed driver of a Porsche Carrera woke up West Seattle's Alki neighborhood early this morning, after driving the car straight into the Puget Sound. Having overlooked the curve in the road, the driver and his fast-moving and pretty-penny-of-a-car went flying off the road, over the seawall, and submerged about 10 yards offshore. The male driver in his 50s managed to escape from the sinking car uninjured. Police officers were able to tow the car out of the water shortly after the crash. more ›

Police Chief Crashes on Blackberry and It Isn't Wine

Federal Way police chief Brian Wilson (second most generic white guy name ever) received a verbal reprimand from the city manager for hitting another car while checking his Blackberry. And he wasn’t even drunk. He didn’t reek of weed, didn’t have prescription painkillers strewn across his dashboard, nor did any Rainier cans fall from his car at the scene. So, as is the custom for Federal Way po-po for their first crash, he just got a stern talking-to. more ›

Washingtonian Heavily Drinks Her Way Through Wisconsin

The Midwest gets a bad rap, especially from natives of the relatively balmy Northwest states. We've always thought that's a little unfair; the colder, cheesier region isn't that bad. A person shouldn't, for instance, have to heavily drink her way through Wisconsin, like this 60-year-old Washington resident did while visiting the state. Not only is heavily drinking your way through Wisconsin a bad idea legally (she was caught seriously trashed behind the wheel not once, not twice, but three times), but you might also miss some of the many charms of the midwestern snowy winter while spending all of your energy simultaneously trying to stay in your lane and pouring yourself glasses of boxed wine. Focus, people. For everything there's a season, and a time for every purpose under the sun; there's a time for Washington and a time for Wisconsin. For that matter, there's a time for drinking and a time for driving. Don't flaunt the heavens' law by doing them at the same time. more ›

Desperate Times Call For Desperate Measures

On Monday night, traffic cops pulled over a Volkswagen R32 for doing 110mph on I-90 by the floating bridge. What could possibly have befuddled this driver's brain enough to make him think he was on the autobahn? There's only one answer compelling enough to explain it, and it's the answer the driver gave the officer: he was racing home to place a bid on eBay. In this broken world, good explanations are not always good excuses--the driver spent that night in jail. We shed a tear for his lost auction, and really hope he can quickly find another used plastic widget for his arcade cabinet restoration project (or what have you). more ›

Hang Up & Drive Law Starts Today

Don't say we didn't warn you...This morning's commute will be the first in Washington state where that jackass swerving in front of you while texting on their Blackberry is actually breaking the law, rather than merely endangering their life and yours. While hands-on cell phone offenders have to get pulled over for something else ticket-worthy in order to get slapped with the new fine, we are glad to see common sense become actionable law. more ›

One Week and Counting

You've got one week, Seattle, until the bumper sticker motto of "Hang Up & Drive" becomes state law. Starting next Tuesday, July 1st, it will be illegal to operate a moving vehicle while talking on a hand-held cell phone. Drivers will be able to continue their conversations and multi-tasking, as long as they have a hands-free device. If you are caught talking (or, God forbid, texting) and driving after the 1st, you will face at least a $124 ticket. So get it out of your system now! more ›
