Sometimes a good ski movie can console you during an off year, but we're already having a record-breaking snow season (ok, it's no 1998, but still, the quality and volume of the snow we've been getting this year is reminiscent of our days growing up in Utah for what that's worth). So maybe you don't need a powder porn flick to fuel your stoke, but we're thinking that Steep (showing in a limited run at the Varsity) will be worth a viewing regardless. (It's a limited run, and we think tomorrow night is the last night, but we can't tell from the website or their phone recording, so you might want to hustle out and see it tonight.)

Eric Blehm’s third book, The Last Season, reconstructs the story of Randy Morgenson, a National Park Service backcountry ranger in California's rugged Sierra Nevada Mountains who heads out for a routine 3-day patrol in the summer of 1996, never to be seen again. Exploring numerous theories surrounding the circumstances of Morgenson's disappearance--suicide, accidental death, even starting over with a new anonymous life--Blehm retraces the ranger's steps, weaving together a story that celebrates the juxtaposition of the breathtaking yet unforgiving terrain of the high Sierra backcountry wilderness, and the people dedicated enough to serve it. Seattlest was unable to attend his reading at Elliot Bay a couple weeks ago, but we chatted with him a few days later about the process of writing a book that took eight years to research.

Just two years ago, veteran Mt. Rainier ranger and climber Charlie Borgh helped rescue Scott Richards, who spent two days on the mountain trying to save his friend Doug Cooley (tragically, Cooley died just a few hours after being rescued).
