They're light, they're fluffy and they're free. IHOP [Seattle locations] is giving away short stacks today. There was hardly a wait at all at the Aurora location, friendly service, and if you need another reason to have pancakes for lunch: there's that scoop of whipped butter they're hoping you'll donate to help fund local children's hospitals.

Sultry indie/alt-country chanteuse Neko Case is debuting "People Got a Lot of Nerve" [mp3], the first single from her forthcoming album Middle Cyclone (out March 3), and as an added bonus, she's raising money for puppies and kitties. (See above PSA.)

From the Rainier Valley Post: "In less than a week, 75 people have donated more than $3,500 to the children of Rainier Valley neighbor Noemi Lopez, who was stabbed to death by her ex-husband and high-school sweetheart exactly one week ago today."

While it may seem clever to hide valuables in kitschy contraptions like hollow bibles and fake soup cans, we imagine Theresa Hekel would highly recommend against it. Hekel accidently donated a fake soup can that was filled with family heirlooms and jewelry when cleaning out her pantry for a local charity. The can was a so-called safe or stash can, sold to consumers to safely hide valuables or unmentionables from burglars or nosy guests. The fake soup can obviously did its job too well, because Hekel scooped it up with the rest of the canned goods in her cupboard and dropped them off at a local food bank. By the time Hekel realized her mistake, it was too late. The Salvation Army has notified area food banks about the tomato soup can filled with jewelry, but no one has reported finding it.
