Lots of great live music possibilities this weekend!
This weekend there are a lot of shows that we recommend you avoid, not that you're going to listen to Seattlest and tear up your tickets or anything, but if you previously had no idea these were happening this weekend you can pat yourself on the back for successfully avoiding any mention of them so far. First Fishbone is playing Studio 7. Stay away. Second, Jello Biafra is in town. Not there's anything wrong with Jello, exactly. Let's just say he draws a particular crowd. Finally, the Gypsy Kings are at the Paramount.
Now, we must admit to never having really listened to Dinosaur Jr. before reading Azerrad's book. We were a little too young to remember the days when the coolest vinyl you could own was while we were drunk at some college party, but that's about it.
About two years ago we caught Dinosaur Jr down at the Showbox. It was the first tour in about 20 years that the three founding members of the group--J. Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Emmet Patrick "Murph" Murphy--were performing together, and they were showing their age. Murph was balding or bald (he'd finished shaving his head to obscure the fact) and was huffing behind his trap kit. Mascis looked kinda like something the dog drug in off the street: Overweight, long hair all scraggly and white, with jowls to boot. And then there was Barlow: Trim, fit, and dancing excitedly.
MUSIC: Normally, we try to avoid El Corazon at all costs, but there’s an early show there today for a very good cause. During last week’s storm, Kate Fleming, a talented voice-over artist, died while attempting to save the audio gear in her home studio. Tonight’s show—featuring Speaker Speaker, Patience Please, Megasapian, In the Empty City, and more—is in Kate’s memory, with the money benefitting her family.
Celebrate Ben Franklin's 300th birthday with the Bikini Bandits and Phillyist! (NSFW). Speaking of Mr. Franklin, send in a picture of Ben (or Ed Rendell) with a red tongue and win a free t-shirt. And they might have the next YearlyKos in Philly.
If you aren't one of the 4 million people going to see Dave Matthews Band at the Gorge, we offer you our congratulations as well as a recommendation to see the newly reunited Dinosaur Jr. at the Showbox. Yes, we know we blogged about it before, but it's Dinosaur Jr.
Do you miss the late '90's when any liberal arts grad who knew what a mouse was could land an 80k a year job? Not us, since we dedicated those years to drinking champagne at .com launch sites.
Man, oh man there is some good live music this weekend.
