• Resident Capitol Hill psychic Destiny recently opened her ground-level storefront on Broadway. Not even two months later, CHS reports, a devastating fire started by an overheated electrical cord engulfed her shop, leaving $9,000 in damages.
• Who tagged Dick's? Seattle 911 reports last night someone defaced the iconic roof sign of Dick's Drive-In on Northeast 45th Street. Police are on the look out for those (with a size 7 shoe) responsible.

Husband and wife theater team Mike Daisey (the monologist) and Jean-Michele Gregory (the director) met and began collaborating together in Seattle before moving to New York eight years ago. We spent an afternoon in their ground floor Brooklyn apartment, talking about the move, about how starting out in Seattle helped their careers, and what they miss about our town.

Recall that we've been up and down Queen Anne in search of a good burger. A snowstorm apparently extinguished Flame the night we originally wanted to go, so we wandered into Hilltop Ale House that night, and Dick's the following day. Another time, we gave Peso's a try. Still not satisfied, Seattlest finally made it back to Flame.

Seattlest's wine guy, Ronald, kicks off the weekend by hosting a $75, 5-course, 5-wine wine dinner Friday at Portfolio, the dining room of the Art Institute's culinary academy. Saturday night will find him, Barolo in hand, at Mitchelli's for a farewell toast to the venerable "Trat," closing later this month after 32 years in Pioneer Square.

During that vaguely hellish snowstorm right before Christmas, the City of Seattle may or may not have missed garbage pickup a few times at your house. You will recall a certain stench. If they missed your house two times or more during those weeks, the city has announced they will be sending you a check for $5 to make up for it! Man, $5. That's a whole two meals at Dick's, Seattle. Of course, $5 can also buy you a neighborhood kid willing to clean out the insides of your putrid, slimy garbage can. It's your call what you'll do with this unexpected bounty.

There's something touching about this photo, and it's not just the lovey-dovey fries-and-milkshake. There's that copper-colored wrapper around the Dick's burger, the twinkle of autumn light on the leaves outside, the loving, respectful way the two figures look at each other, mid-bite. In case you haven't heard, the dude is Gary Locke, former governor, and gal is his wife, Mona, and it looks like he'll be joining the Obama administration as Secretary of Commerce. No freaking French dinners on the DC party circuit for the Lockes, merci beaucoup, we're in the hands of a guy who knows the value of a 19-cent burger. Okay, it's more than that now, but that's what it cost 55 years ago, when Dick Spady started the biz in Wallingford. Bodes well, in our opinion, for the future of international trade and the virtures of moderate consumption.

After our recent jaunt up to Ballard for burgers at Lunchbox Laboratory, the quest continues on Queen Anne Avenue. We already hit Dick's and Hilltop Ale House, so upon recommendation, we headed to Peso's for happy hour.

Three weeks in Asia gave us a burning desire for a burger, but a snowstorm put out the flame at Flame, so stuck on foot, we settled upon Hilltop Ale House to satisfy our craving. We've liked Hilltop since back when its non-smoking days mattered most, and we appreciate the neighborhood feel. The menu hawks the hormone-free nature of the burger, which comes on a baguette with sautéed onions and peppers along with mustard and mayo. Pretty good, especially with a side of tabouleh (our preference over chips), though a little skimpy for $9.95.

• West Seattle Blog reports that former Garfield Bulldog, Washington Husky, and current Portland Trailblazer Brandon Roy, will be dedicating a new basketball court at the Delridge Community Center next Wednesday. We remember Roy as one of the tallest kids walking the halls of GHS and it's great to see him succeeding and giving back to the local community.
• Capitol Hill Seattle reports what we noticed aghast yesterday--Dick's on Broadway is closed for construction. Thankfully, there's nothing major to panic about, as they will reopen this Thursday.
• Local blogger Sable, of The Sable Verity is on fire! She posted 25 separate posts yesterday, many of which were about the presidential election and Sarah Palin. Tucked amongst the politics posts, was an insightful personal piece on race, cultural competency, and intentions. Sable seems to be equal parts smart and sassy. Her blog's tag-line reads: "You can disagree, but I’ll still be right." And, for today, we don't have a single word of disagreement.

Not exactly news in the sense that we didn't know it was coming...but, the day of reckoning is finally here. Dick's is serving fries that have been cooked in trans fat-free oil.

3) Shortly after Dick's opened, local cab drivers dubbed it Ricardo's Club 19 because of the 19¢ hamburgers. Local wisenheimers persuaded people to dress up and hit the new nightclub in town, inspiring dates to tell them "You're such a Ricardo." When hamburger prices rose to 22¢, the name followed suit. Today you can visit Ricardo's Club 120.
