Wow, We Just Saw A Blue-Ribbon <em>Elephant Man</em>

Strawberry Theatre Workshop is building a repertoire of person-in-society plays that, recently, have included an intriguing look at filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl; a laugh-out-loud, musical take on the life of Johannes Gutenberg; and now a captivating portrait of Joseph (aka John) Merrick, the Elephant Man. It's like having a live Biography Channel with really eclectic tastes.

the story, simply pulling it off doesn't count for much. The good people at ACT would really have to add something for us to walk out feeling as though this were anything more than a seasonal moneymaker (hey, they've been doing it for 25 years for a reason), and surprisingly, they actually delivered. When we left, we had a new-found respect for the old Christmas warhorse, because ACT managed to make us see the classic as though for the first time, tearing away all the horrible associations we've gathered from decades-worth of mediocre adaptations and reminding us of why Dicken's century-plus-old story is so essential.

Four Dickens Carolers are singing in lovely harmony. Children toddle by, then look back at the carolers, their eyes wide with wonder. Garland and lights are everywhere.

Seattle Rep's Twelfth Night, which they're nerdily calling Twelfe Night as per the First Folio, is nearly shipwrecked by dull production design and the cast's inability to make anything of the esoteric wordplay that audiences once found witty, or at least clever. But the portrayal of life lived to excess is still gripping drama, and Frank X.'s steward Malvolio burns with a self-importance that veers from comic over-stepping to something much eerier. Tickets start at $15 ($10 for 25 and under).
