Just like almost every other weekend has been since we can all remember, it's a little dreary and you aren't sure you feel like going out and doing anything. Then you look around for what shows are going on. If you see a few you're interested in and can't really decide, let us do that for you. Tonight is the veteran musician David Bazan with his semi-new and now fully broken in band. We caught their first show together at Bumbershoot last year and it didn't seem to be their first gig together, but there you have it. Clean and beautiful from the start. The next performance was Head and the Heart (HATH) opening for them at the Showbox last year. It was an incredibly fun show with HATH right in their element with the legendary Seattle rock singer as the headliner. The entire evening meshed into this fantastic fun folk and rock groove.
Seattlest Music Suggests Tonight: David Bazan and Rocky Votolato at Showbox
Countdown in photos: Day 26
I've already posted a countdown entry for another band of the same show from which today's shot comes. That's because it was a show of epic proportions. Not only was it three amazingly talented groups taking the stage, but they were all local.
Countdown in Photos: Day 16
Seattlest will be counting down to 2011 with a series of posts on our highlights of this year and what we're looking forward to in the next. Got a list to suggest? Send it our way. See the entire series here.
Gallery: That Locals Show Where Our Heads Exploded (or David Bazan & Friends at the Showbox)
You know when you're anticipating something, and then it happens and it's even better than you imagined? Take that feeling and multiply it twice over and you'll understand what it was like on Saturday at the Showbox Market. Damien Jurado was beautiful, timid, and incredible as always. His soft-spoken nature was shoved aside as he sang and bantered on stage with his backing band (which included members of Kay Kay and his Weathered Underground as well as Sam from Hey Marseilles).
Local Lineup Tonight That Will Make Your Head Explode
Three headliner-worthy acts are playing, together, at the Showbox Market in a few hours. It starts with the beautiful voice of Damien Jurado. He's been around the Seattle music scene for years but has stayed somewhat under the radar. We're clueless how he's managed to do this since he's so talented. It's most likely his quiet demeanor and soft-spoken, but kind personality that doesn't exactly scream "listen to me!". Though, when he begins to play, the crowd tends to become pretty quiet to let the music radiate throughout the room.
Bumbershoot: 5 Photos of the Best Bands of Day 2
We're not going to lie, Day 2 of Bumbershoot was unexpectedly amazing. Of the bands that made our schedule, there were quite a few that have been on our iPods for years (Weezer, David Bazan). There were those newer to our collection (Surfer Blood, Hey Marseilles). And then there were those we'd only heard in passing (Horse Feathers, Slender Means). Long story short, each and everyone of the bands that we saw today met or surpassed our expectations.
We'll be writing up or thoughts in the next day or so but in the meantime, we've decided to post a handful of shots from the day.
Bumbershoot: Top Ten Local Acts You've Got To See
We thought it would be a pretty easy project to sort through the Bumbershoot bill for the top ten local acts. Holy cow, were we wrong! There is an unbelievable list of local bands that you would love. Unfortunately, that would be entirely too work for one weekend. Instead, we took on the monumental task of whittling it down to ten. Understandably, it was pretty difficult. Below are Seattlest's picks for the entire weekend if you are looking for a local music overload. They're listed in order of appearance at the festival.
Weekend Music
Road trip! The seventh annual What the Heck Fest is taking place all weekend at venues in Anacortes. Mt. Eerie is but one of the many bands set to perform.
Say Hi to Eric Elbogen
Lo-fi indie pop band Say Hi used to be known as Say Hi to Your Mom. It also used to based in Brooklyn and now it's found in Seattle. Regardless, the man behind the band is Eric Elbogen, who records the songs at home, playing all the instruments, providing most of the vocals (except for the occasional guest artist), and even mixing the tracks his own damn self. His last album (pre-name change), Impeccable Blahs, was mostly about vampires, though Star Trek got a shoutout too. Now the band's in version 2.0 with a truncated moniker and new album The Wishes and the Glitch, which has a decidedly (*cringe*) more mature sound. Say Hi plays Chop Suey this Thursday, along with Battle Hymns and Siberian (9pm, all ages, $8). We spoke to Eric about getting older, living and playing in Seattle, and being on the low rung of the Sasquatch ladder.
Seattle to Austin
Seattlest is quaking in their boots (bought especially for the occasion) with excitement for this years SXSW in Austin, Tex. We're making our initial sojourn to the festival and are so pleased to see there will be a strong Seattle contingent joining us in Austin this year.
Heads Up: Sasquatch Lineup By Day
Right on the heels of the announcement that the Mars Volta was added to the Sasquatch lineup, and right before tickets go on sale this Saturday, the three-day music festival has seen fit to delineate who will be playing on which day:
Heads Up: Sasquatch Lineup Announced
After months of wild speculation, the official 2008 Sasquatch lineup has finally been announced:
Weekend Music
Things always die down right around the holidays, so not much is going on tonight, except local noise mavens X-Ray Press will be celebrating their CD release (and the addition of their new keyboardist) at Jules Maes in Georgetown.
Aural Pleasures (10/3 - 10/9)
October is here! That means candy apples, inappropriate costumes, and tons of live music.
Aural Pleasures
After kicking our collective asses for four consecutive days, the heat is finally backing down. So pull yourself together. Go outside again -- especially to Capitol Hill this weekend.
The One Thing Jesus and Satan Have in Common
Apparently, Jesus rocks! Or at least music made by people who love Jesus is capable of rocking. That seems to be the theme of Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music?, a documentary about the Christian rock scene screening tonight at the 911 Media Arts Center Theater.
