Oh, hello crazies. Mike Stark of the Huffington Post and FireDogLake chased down Republicans in D.C. to ask if they believe our President is a native-born citizen of our country. And who's that, second in the video, unwilling to call out a lunatic fringe movement? Why that would be Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), who has represented Washington's 5th District (which includes Spokane) since 2005 and "would like to see the documents."

- During an election season that touted change and tolerance, the passage of Proposition 8 in California is a painful reminder that intolerance and hatred still have electoral support in this country. Saturday is a national day of protest against Proposition 8, and the Seattle protests begin at Volunteer Park at 10:30 a.m.

- Speaking of theft, the gentleman in these video stills definitely chose the wrong house in Mt. Baker to break into... i.e. the house fully wired with surveillance video cameras.
King County counted another 20,000-odd votes today, leaving Dave Reichert (R) up 1,965 votes over Democrat Darcy Burner in the 8th Congressional District race. It doesn't feel right to be calling it a race, exactly, at this point, unless there are molasses races we don't know about. There are still about 276,000 King County votes to be tabulated, and at 20,000-30,000 per shift, it's going to be a while yet before we have a final result. And then the recount can start. For those of you scoring at home, Peter Goldmark has a lead of over 40,000 on Doug Sutherland for Public Lands Commissioner, and Randy Dorn is up 43,000 over incumbent Superintendent of Public Schools Terry Bergeson.
Things are heating up in the 8th Congressional District race, which pits the incumbent, former King County Sheriff and Bush waterboy Dave Reichert against the challenger, retired Microsoft exec Darcy Burner. After losing the 2006 race, and trailing most of the 2008 campaign, Burner several polls have shown Burner surging to a lead in recent weeks. A SurveyUSA poll released Wednesday evening has Burner leading 50-46 after trailing by ten points a month ago.
Maybe you're sick of the back-and-forth of political debates, where nothing substantive is actually said and everything boils down to the repetition of key drinking words ("maverick," "my friends," and "the Bush administration"). But just in case you're not yet fully revolted by the process, there's a debate tonight today in Bellevue between Dave Reichert and Darcy Burner--the two candidates head-to-head in a rematch for the 8th Congressional District seat. This is the first debate between the candidates in this go-round, and it will hopefully be shown eventually on local public access TV. If and when it is televised, Washington voters, your drinking words are: "Green River killer" and "net-roots."

Darcy Burner, Dave Reichert's Democratic challenger in the 8th Congressional District's race, lost her home this morning to a fire. Early reports say the house was destroyed but the candidate and her family escaped without injury. We'll post more details, including photos, as soon as they are released.
We'll be the first to admit Hillary Clinton's embarrassing statement last week (and other occasions), when she recalled RFK's assassination in June of 1968 as an example of things that can happen late in a campaign. We all know there's a possibility the first viable black presidential candidate could get shot. It's been talked about and analyzed and discussed (and, yes, joked about by the other party). But, somehow, to hear another Democratic candidate (one this Seattlest supports) allude to such a tragedy just kind of crossed a line.
...you're all about to be caught.
Dave Reichert can sell. His image as the "Savior Sheriff" of Green River sold him a ticket to Washington, D.C., a few years back and now, after a lengthy struggle with his conscience, he’s sold the right to have his book adapted into a TV miniseries on Lifetime.
It's an election year, which means it's time again for Democrats in this part of Western Washington to get all excited about the opportunity to flip the 8th Congressional District into our column. That's right. For the next few months, we will be told to believe that the Eastside district's trend toward a more liberal stance will be completed this year and that this time, Microsoft Millionaire Darcy Burner will actually beat Rep. Dave "I'm the sheriff that caught the Green River Killer single-handedly" Reichert.
The 8th congressional district lost five-term Congresswoman Jennifer Dunn and candidate Rodney Tom in the last twenty-four hours.

Via the Slog, Hominid Views, and The Seattle Times, Darcy Burner conceded the election for Washington's 8th District congressional seat to Sheriff Dave Reichert last night.
Dave Reichert not only admits that he tattled on a school-bus driver who flipped off President Bush, he brags about it. And David Postman of the Seattle Times has it on tape.
We linked to a story earlier this week about how an Issaquah school bus driver got fired after Dave Reichert witnessed him give President Bush the finger. Yesterday David Postman reported that the driver wasn't fired simply for flipping off the President:

In the old days, when men were men and trees fit in the ground, newspapers were no less biased than the average KVI caller. Most were organs of one political party or the other, and as a result were very entertaining.
A common liberal criticism of Congressman Dave Reichert (R-Eastside) is that, despite cultivating an outsider image, he's in lockstep with the Republican Party.
As both the Seattle Times and P-I are reporting the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's latest national ad campaign in support of Republican lawmakers has had to be tweaked a tiny bit.

Last month, you remember, there was all this hoopla over the notion of opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling, thanks to its inclusion in a budget bill. Thanks in large part to public response, and to 20 Republicans who were able to suss out what "wildlife refuge" means, that provision failed.
You may or may not be aware, but Congress is all in a tizzy (repeatedly) over a number of bills either recently passed or currently on the docket, and reconvened earlier this week to try to get all warm and fuzzy before the year ends. Seattlest did some digging and if any of you are even half as confused as we are, we hope this helps. We're going to break these bills down, James Brown short-sentence-with-rhythm style.
