Seattlest was recently on a ferry through the San Juans that stopped to allow a pod of orcas to cross in front of us. From the car deck of the boat we couldn't see much - just a few dorsal fins arching out of the water and some interested pleasure boats trying to keep a respectful distance. Oooo, wow, big fish in the water. Seeing the dorsal fins is pretty cool, but having the dorsal fins remind you of what you're not seeing is very cool. There's another dimension right next to us that we never get to truly experience - In fact it takes a few dorsal fins for us to even acknowledge its presence. It's weird in that other dimension, and although we're generally not conscious of it, we have a presence there.

Dave Neiwert has an awesome article on resident orca populations in this week's Seattle Weekly in which he issues marching orders to the various people involved with trying to save local resident orca pods. Researchers, there needs to be more evidence that the Snake River dams are depriving the pods of the chinnok salmon that are their main food source. Get to it. Environmental action groups, the Endangered Species Act is a powerful weapon that can be leveraged in court against the dams that are killing those salmon. Chop chop.
The Seattle Times today stokes the raging firestorm of fear created by the discovery last week of the dope tunnel between houses straddling the border with Canada. Who knows what Canadian fury could be streaming into the state of Washington through similar operations?
Is it just Seattlest or does the Amazon.com site suddenly look stupider?
