Amos Lee at Moore Theater Tonight!
Amos Lee is still a somewhat unknown name, but he has been on tour with some greats. Considering his youthfulness, it's quite surprising that he's opened for the likes of Bob Dylan, Dave Matthews Band, and Paul Simon. Much of his influence comes from folk and blues with a dash of jazz thrown in. He's a storyteller with quite a beautiful voice to tell them. He has a new album coming out on the 25th of this month that promises to be the best yet. With guest vocalists including Willie Nelson and Lucinda Williams as well as Calexico doing the backing music. We're really excited about that last bit of news, Calexico and Amos Lee would seem to fit together like pees in a pod. Beautiful melodic tones and a sweet voice to top it off; sounds like the best musical sundae imaginable. Tonight he's going to serenade Seattle with his dulcet tones at the Moore, and trust us--you'll be sorry if you miss out.
Countdown in photos: Day 30
I've mentioned before that this year as been quite a whirlwind. I've been lucky enough to take part in this concert photography gig amongst some amazingly talented people both on the stage and beside me, camera in hand.
Gallery: Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds at McCaw. Epic.
Editor's note: Since Morgen was busy shooting, she turns the narrative over to Seattlest lit writer and avowed Dave fan Kim Banti.
Neighborhood News and Local Blog Round-Up
- Seattle's famed musician Dave Matthews is never too good for a ride around Green Lake. He's one with the locals, and we like that.
- Powerball no more. That means, no bouncing balls spinning in a bubble, no cheesy ball reader wearing sequins, and no additional $12 million for the state of Washington.
Can't Miss It: Tuesday
FULL PUPPET NUDITY: You might have noticed that big banner on the side of the Paramount advertising puppet cleavage Avenue Q. Well, tonight is opening night, so if you haven't gotten your tickets for this ever-so-brief run of the Tony Award-winning show, now's your time. Seattlest will be there tonight for the kick-off, but then it's up to you to get out and see those puppets sing and swear all over the place.
Douchebags Aplenty at John in the Morning at Night
Saturday at the Croc, we hated most of the crowd at first sight. Who invited the tools to John in the Morning at Night? Jager shots were being consumed, and there were way too many dudes in backwards white baseball caps, just chillaxing with their brahs. For this, we can only blame Vampire Weekend.
Chop And My Mom Will Shoot
Don’t you hate when you’re out by the lake sitting on a dock with your best buds, sipping on some mass produced brew, just laughing and having a caucasianly good time, when someone pulls out a guitar and starts strumming until a song breaks out—evening ruined.
One Reason to See Parsons Dance This Weekend
Go see Parsons Dance at the Meany tonight or Saturday. You should go to watch one man perform one solo, and you will thank Seattlest for telling you to do so. In all our many years spanning from actually being a dancer to attending countless modern dance performances, we have never in our life seen anything such as Parson's 1982 work Caught. (That we had never seen it, much less heard of it until now, is pleasantly humbling.) Thursday night, it was performed by Jeremy Smith, a newcomer to the company. You may not have the good fortune of seeing Smith in action, as two other dancers will likely take his place Friday and Saturday. And while we're certain those performing it tonight and Saturday will be skilled, and you will indeed still thank us, we saw them on stage with Smith in other pieces, and we know that he is lightning incarnate.
Not Gonna See My "O" Face
Seattlest had never been to the O Lounge until last weekend, and, given the service there, we may or may not return in the forseeable future. It's a swank 'n' posh little bar/music venue that acts as an adjunct to Orrapin, the Thai restaurant next door. With its warm orange walls covered in candles and Hindu-inspired wooden bas reliefs, the space is (in the words of one of our companions for the evening) "very top-of-Queen Anne."
Garth, Thom and Lou
If you aren't one of the 4 million people going to see Dave Matthews Band at the Gorge, we offer you our congratulations as well as a recommendation to see the newly reunited Dinosaur Jr. at the Showbox. Yes, we know we blogged about it before, but it's Dinosaur Jr.
Hurry Up and Date
Seattlest has engaged in more than our fair share of dating. From our years of experience doing so in this town, we've already established tried-and-true places to meet up with someone for a first date, to make out in public on a subsequent date, and to let him down easy not too long after that. Hell, sometimes it feels as if all we do is date, and why not when it combines a few of our favorite activities, like having dinner or drinks, dazzling a new person with our engaging wit and charm, and making rash judgments about potential suitors based on little to nothing?
