King County counted another 20,000-odd votes today, leaving Dave Reichert (R) up 1,965 votes over Democrat Darcy Burner in the 8th Congressional District race. It doesn't feel right to be calling it a race, exactly, at this point, unless there are molasses races we don't know about. There are still about 276,000 King County votes to be tabulated, and at 20,000-30,000 per shift, it's going to be a while yet before we have a final result. And then the recount can start. For those of you scoring at home, Peter Goldmark has a lead of over 40,000 on Doug Sutherland for Public Lands Commissioner, and Randy Dorn is up 43,000 over incumbent Superintendent of Public Schools Terry Bergeson.

This morning we woke to chilly air and dark clouds, and although we had signed up to volunteer at the Obama office later in the day we considered mailing it in. But then Sarah Palin came on the tube, telling us how she'd make a great VP, and we said "Hell No!" and a few minutes later, we were in our car headed for the Obama/Burner campaign office in Bellevue.

As controversy swirls over whether or not Darcy Burner has misrepresented her college economics education in a bid to portray herself as better prepared than her opponent David Reichert to deal with the current crisis, local liberal blog HorsesAss.org is calling into question Reichert's own college education. According to his official bio, Reichert received a BA from Concordia University, a small Lutheran college in Portland, Ore., in 1970. However, HorsesAss.org is suggesting that Concordia didn't offer four year programs until a decade later. Indeed, according the university's own history, the first four-year program students didn't graduate until 1980. () UPDATE: Since this post went up, Reichert's bio has been changed to read "A.A." instead of "B.A." The original language can be seen here at archive.org. This would seem to confirm that David Reichert does not have a bachelor's degree at all. UPDATE 2: It appears this error may not stem from the candidate. Reichert's self-provided CV in the official voters' guide does in fact list his degree as A.A.

With only a couple weeks till election day, it's nice to see that the Reichert–Burner race has become downright pissy. The latest skirmish is over Darcy Burner's academic credentials. This morning, reporter Emily Heffter took the Republican bait and wrote a piece questioning the veracity of Burner's claim—made during the debate on Oct. 10—that she has a degree in economics from Harvard.

Things are heating up in the 8th Congressional District race, which pits the incumbent, former King County Sheriff and Bush waterboy Dave Reichert against the challenger, retired Microsoft exec Darcy Burner. After losing the 2006 race, and trailing most of the 2008 campaign, Burner several polls have shown Burner surging to a lead in recent weeks. A SurveyUSA poll released Wednesday evening has Burner leading 50-46 after trailing by ten points a month ago.

Maybe you're sick of the back-and-forth of political debates, where nothing substantive is actually said and everything boils down to the repetition of key drinking words ("maverick," "my friends," and "the Bush administration"). But just in case you're not yet fully revolted by the process, there's a debate tonight today in Bellevue between Dave Reichert and Darcy Burner--the two candidates head-to-head in a rematch for the 8th Congressional District seat. This is the first debate between the candidates in this go-round, and it will hopefully be shown eventually on local public access TV. If and when it is televised, Washington voters, your drinking words are: "Green River killer" and "net-roots."

Darcy Burner, Dave Reichert's Democratic challenger in the 8th Congressional District's race, lost her home this morning to a fire. Early reports say the house was destroyed but the candidate and her family escaped without injury. We'll post more details, including photos, as soon as they are released.

We'll be the first to admit Hillary Clinton's embarrassing statement last week (and other occasions), when she recalled RFK's assassination in June of 1968 as an example of things that can happen late in a campaign. We all know there's a possibility the first viable black presidential candidate could get shot. It's been talked about and analyzed and discussed (and, yes, joked about by the other party). But, somehow, to hear another Democratic candidate (one this Seattlest supports) allude to such a tragedy just kind of crossed a line.

It's an election year, which means it's time again for Democrats in this part of Western Washington to get all excited about the opportunity to flip the 8th Congressional District into our column. That's right. For the next few months, we will be told to believe that the Eastside district's trend toward a more liberal stance will be completed this year and that this time, Microsoft Millionaire Darcy Burner will actually beat Rep. Dave "I'm the sheriff that caught the Green River Killer single-handedly" Reichert.

The 8th congressional district lost five-term Congresswoman Jennifer Dunn and candidate Rodney Tom in the last twenty-four hours.

Via the Slog, Hominid Views, and The Seattle Times, Darcy Burner conceded the election for Washington's 8th District congressional seat to Sheriff Dave Reichert last night.

Right out of the gate we're going to D up on Jordan, pressure him a bit and maybe force a few turnovers. MARIA CANTWELL for U.S. Senate. And since we finally figured out how to beat the Bulls' fullcourt press we're going to get a lot of transition baskets from Payton driving to the hole and Sam Perkins from the arc. A pull-up jumper over Longley for JAY INSLEE for U.S. State Rep. A long two from the baseline for JIM MCDERMOTT for U.S. State Rep. We'll go into halftime knowing that the ballot's going pretty well and the Key Arena crowd is going nuts, but we've got to keep the pressure on. Down three games to zip in the best-of-seven series means nothing tonight. Out of the locker room coach Karl has us staying strong on defense while managing to pick up a few buckets. INITIATIVE 930 - NO, INITIATIVE 933 - NO, INITIATIVE 931 - YES. Die, initiatives, die. When Jordan tries to start a run we'll squash it with an Ervin Johnson block and a Hersey Hawkins three on the other end to the rapture of the crowd. JAMIE PEDERSON for State Rep. ED MURRAY for Senator! We're almost there, but a comeback at this point in the game would be difficult -not impossible- for this magic Bulls team. Kukoc is stripped at midcourt, a pass to Payton for the lay in. DARCY BURNER for U.S. Rep. Ball's loose at the Bulls end, McMillan scoops it to Payton who spins around Jordan and fires to Kemp flashing down the lane! The ballot is completed! We're going strong to the ballot box! Kemp absolutely explodes over Pippen and Rodman and the basket counts! We're hanging from the ballot box in ecstasy as time expires. On the way off the floor/out of the church basement we'll exchange high fives and flying chest bumps with the election officials and then head home to face the inevitable games 5 and 6.

Sometimes, The Seattle Times has got to make you wonder. It was one thing to go ahead and endorse David Reichert for Congress over Darcy Burner despite widespread dissatisfaction with Republican leadership, but to spin his shameless partisanship as moderation? That's a new low.

Darcy Burner continues to disappoint. Now she's hiding from cameras, reports the Times' David Postman. Burner claims that state law prevents Republican operatives from filming her appearances. Yet Democratic party staffers have taped Republican Mike! McGavick's public appearances all summer. Postman's got the Burner campaign's incredible explanation on his blog.

A common liberal criticism of Congressman Dave Reichert (R-Eastside) is that, despite cultivating an outsider image, he's in lockstep with the Republican Party.

Darcy Burner has a diary up at Daily Kos today that talks about Net Neutrality and furthers our opinion that she has an understanding of the internets beyond the "series of tubes" imagery of other nameless (ahem, look up there, ahem, Alaska) state politicians.

We were all set to write a little thing about the minimum wage protest tomorrow and belittle it along the lines of "who cares about the national minimum wage when our state's is already the highest in the country" without knowing anything about it (as is our wont), but we accidentally stopped to read what was being protested.
