Heavens to Etsy: Crafty 'n Happy
Though this has been a short week for any folks who had President's Day off, it's still somehow felt long, and a bit unsettling. Perhaps it's winter's disgruntled return, roaring back to remind us that hey, it's not April yet‐February needs to give us one more cold wet kiss before slouching off for the next year. Regardless, this is a week where we needed a pick-me-up.
Heavens to Etsy: Handcut Map of Seattle
Sometimes nothing's more eloquent than silence and nothing's more beautiful than negative space. This hand-cut map of Seattle from studiokmo takes advantage of that fact, turning the water and the places people live into empty space and making our roads into vast expanses of white. It's stark, it's elegant, and it shows the beautiful flow of our city. Less loud than the neighborhood maps, it still speaks volumes about Seattle. It's yours for a cool $1,000.
Knit One, Plunder Two: Vikings and Your Grandma at the 2010 Nordic Knitting Conference
Members of Bathory may not sport Fana cardigans on stage, but knitting is actually one of the oldest Nordic crafts, and a variation on the art was even popular among the Vikings (giving a whole new, knitting needle meaning to "Viking metal"). This weekend, crafty Seattleites have a unique opportunity to learn about Nordic knitting—which includes lacemaking, two-end/twined knitting, and weaving techniques—at the Nordic Knitting Conference. And all just in time to make some mittens for winter.
See You at Urban Craft Uprising!
Now in its fifth year, Urban Craft Uprising is the largest indie craft fair in Seattle and the Northwest. Its holiday show at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall runs December 5th and 6th, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Not Your Grandma's Stitch 'n' Bitch
If you’re one of those people who can’t even sew on a button, then you might be dubious about the extent to which such a skill could translate into a lucrative business. Well, it most certainly can and, based on the high number of giddy participants at Urban Craft Uprising this weekend, it often does.
Can't Miss It: Friday
DANCE DANCE DANCE: Pint-size Swedish ex-ballerina Lykke Li returns to Seattle for her largest venue yet, the Showbox at the Market. Last time we saw her, we said she has "an extra helping of cute and an idiosyncratic voice: breathy baby-girl ("Liddle bit in love wi' you," she sings, and your heart melts) mixed with Swedish soul. Her first full album is Youth Novels. Live, she's in perpetual motion, sashaying around the stage, swiveling her hips, one hand pushing the audience back, the other punishing a cymbal with a drumstick." We're not saying it's because her parents were hippies, but she's got a hell of an onstage work ethic.
I Heart Rummage Hearts Chop Suey
Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! At Seattle's own Chop Suey: It's I! Heart! Rummage!
Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, July 11-13
ARTISTS X-ING, WITH CAMERAS: A motley crew of photographers are gathering down at the Market tonight to explore the area through their camera lenses for the evening. They're meeting at that brass pig by the fish throwers (could this event get any more Seattle?) and will be snapping photos around the Market, downtown, Pioneer Square, the waterfront, and more. It's open to anyone who wants to join in the spirit of discovery and photography.
Can't Miss It: Wednesday
POLITICALLY CRAFTY: If you're a Washingtonian for Obama and you love arts and crafts, you'll love making buttons for Obama. The buttons you make will be passed out locally at voter registration and special events, and in communities as far away as West Virginia. Make a difference with a small piece of metal.
...But There Is Such a Thing as a Free Brunch
"I don't know much about these heart rummages," a friend said recently. "You go to them though, right?" And we havegone to them. Once. And it's been at least 18 months, since we were non-parents at the time. And we really liked it, so we're not sure exactly why we haven't been back, but back we haven't been. We didn't even realize it'd been taken over by Urban Craft Uprising, a local crafter event that...
