ONE MAN ARMY Rap gods be praised, One Be Lo is back in town! This man's sharp mind never fails to astound and inspire us. What we've said in the past: "He is a master lyricist, an assertive, seasoned spitter of rhyme and reason." On the bill with him are Spaceman (he slays every stage we've ever seen him on), Othello outta Portland repping Lightheaded, and Helladope, the latter of which has been getting some love from The Stranger recently.
Saturday we made it back to PAX with the idea of spending the day in panel discussions. We of course ended up wandering the grounds taking everything in again (the people watching is nothing short of epic), playing more games in the exhibition hall, and only made it to a couple of panels before calling it a day.
Seattlest took a break from the HQ today to head down for some early time at the Penny Arcade Expo. We wanted to get our pass and our bearings a bit before the bulk of the crowds arrived, and it's shaping up to be quite the weekend. Lines were already long, crowds were building, and the swag was flowing freely. It's nerd nirvana, and you won't want to miss out.
Bumbershoot has completely dominated the press this week, but for gamers, this weekend holds importance because of the Penny Arcade Expo, the gaming convention run by the local crew behind gaming/geek culture comic Penny Arcade. The Penny Arcade Expo (aka PAX) starts tomorrow (tonight if you include the pub crawl), marking the the fifth anniversary of the event, and as with every prior year, it looks to be the largest yet, with an expected 45,000 gamers flooding the Convention Center. Seattlest experienced the geekery first-hand two years ago, and we're diving into the madness again this year.

So, you think you have been to a beer festival before? Maybe you went to Fremont Oktoberfest , or maybe you even went to the Seattle International Beer Fest this summer. If you really want to go to a beer festival, get yourself to Denver in 10 days.
On Saturday, Frank Hughes of the Tacoma News-Tribune reported that local real estate developer Dave Sabey had offered to buy the Sonics from Clay Bennett and make them the centerpiece of a development he's planning south of Boeing Field.
MUSIC: God help you if you can't appreciate the genius of Stephen Malkmus. Alright, so he's not playing with Pavement (best indie band EVER, pleeeeeease reunite!), but tonight with The Jicks, he'll have one thing that Pavement never had: badass Janet Weiss on drums. Hells yeah!

Sea-Tac is currently fucked. The wait at security averages 82 minutes. Said a spokesperson:
Would it be worth it to get out of bed that early on a Sunday to score some "free" and no doubt choice real estate probably located on the Moon?
Back in our freelance days, Seattlest was happy to get 50 cents a word. So imagine the triple cherries that flashed before our eyes when we learned that down in PDX you can get 250 writers for three measly bucks!
Just a few weeks ago, we attended a coffee-tasting ritual (called a "cupping") at the Victrola, and crazed roasting genius Tony was there, espousing his bean religion with such fervor that we left inspired ourselves, sinuses filled with nutty aroma and hearts jittery as a tambourine.
More baristas in Seattle! Get me out of here fast. Seattle is already lousy with baristas but the four-day U.S. Barista Championship began here on Thursday bringing more than 40 baristas from around the U.S. Competitors have had to prepare 12 coffee beverages—one espresso, one cappucino, and one specialty drink for four judges, all within 15 minutes. A specialty drink is a fancy Frankenstein of the coffee world—like the curry macchiato, a blend of tumeric, cardamon, allspice, cinnamon, and pepper brewed by Monica Hill of Barfoot Coffee Roasters in Santa Clara, CA. By today, the competition will be whittled down to just six and you can see them slinging their beans and frothing their milk for FREE at the Seattle Temporary Library at 8th Ave. and Pike Street. (You would think the Specialty Coffee Association of America who puts on the event could find a more glamorous venue—the new library or the convention center, maybe.)
