First the Seattle Public School teachers put a spike in the heart of summer, by agreeing to a one-year contract (not ratified until Monday, August 31, kids, so get out there and lobby). Now Shoreline's teachers have reached a "tentative contract agreement," and will vote on it tomorrow. That leaves Kent facing a strike vote at 5 p.m. today. The teachers want smaller classes, better pay. When do they want it? Now!

Is your coffee cup half-empty yet? Krispy Kreme is selling a 16-ounce drip for a dime, which may be good news for those Microsoft temps getting a 10 percent pay cut. That's 40,000 grumpy Microserfs temporary workers, if you're counting. Is this why Washington is Number Two in bankruptcy growth? Even Lucy, the famous Ethiopian fossil (no really, she's old) isn't making money. Her last day at the Pacific Science Center is March 8. The snow isn't sticking around either, but you're probably okay with that.

The Seattle Repertory Theatre has just announced its artistic director, David Esb...Esbjornson has decided not to renew his contract. When it expires on June 30, 2009, so will he. Esbjornson joined Seattle Rep in 2005, and we still have trouble with his name.

"Though we are genuinely disappointed with David's decision, we understand that a complex series of factors informed his thinking." said Marty Taucher, President of the Board of Trustees. "David is well into developing the 2008-2009 season and will continue working through to its successful completion.
We are disappointed, too. Why are artistic directors fleeing Seattle like they know when the next big quake is going to hit? We refer, of course, to Bart Sher's recent decision to extend his Intiman contract by one whole year, to 2009. (In fairness, Sher is said to be "open" to another contract extension.)
