Commandeer the Tractor with Honkies and Dogs, pick a boil with Beefcake, dance through the night and well again into the afternoon at the Garden, then let us shake hands and part the better for our time together.
Can't Miss It: The Weekend and Forever Forward
Can't Miss It: The Weekend
Travel abroad by heading down to Columbia city, watch out for Raindogs and Swordfishtrombones in Ballard, silkscreen your favorite shirt and get your holiday shopping done at Seattle Center, and more!
Can't Miss It: The Weekend
Compose stanzas in unknown languages all weekend at the Henry, be a bumper booster at Shorty's for international finger flippers, and give your Saturday night over to a trip back to the roaring 20s courtesy of the Conor Byrne.
Let's All Have a "Now You Know!" Moment: Brewer's Nights
What’s better than cheap beer? Beer swag! You might be saying to yourself, “Oh knowledgeable beer maven, where could I possibly be lucky enough to strike gold and find this ‘beer swag’ you speak of?” Well, listen closely kids, ‘cause I’m about to tell you of some delightful little gems (aka: Seattle Pubs) that have what’s called brewer's nights. Yes, folks, at fine establishments all over our fair city are such a novelty, and you too can be part of the secret world of brewer's nights at some of our favorite local haunts.
Reverb at Night: Let the Drunkfest Begin
After the sun set and people started to drink at the festival shows, things got a little weird. From other musicians jumping on stage to trapeze artists, we just didn't know what to expect as the night went on. Whatever it was, we had a great time despite the craziness (or maybe because of it).
Look Up! Tony Kevin Jr's EP Release Turned Some Heads
A few weeks ago we streamed a sample of Tony Kevin Jr's upcoming EP Poverty. He was offering up all three songs from the album for free throughout that week. Last night, Conor Byrne's open mic was dubbed his official release show. To celebrate, a big group of friends from the local music scene, including Damien Jurado, Melodie Knight, Matt Hart, Kendra Cox, Ben Carson and many more, joined him on stage for "Mahatma Ghandi." It was a powerful moment, and luckily we captured it to share with you. Enjoy!
Pickwick Wows Conor Byrne Last Night Honoring Kory Kruckenberg
It's been fascinating watching the skyrocketing fame some Seattle music folk have been finding lately. Not only did Macklemore sell out three nights at the Showbox and The Head and the Heart sell out their first headlining show at the same venue in 15 minutes, but local musician and sound engineer Kory Kruckenberg won a Grammy a little over a week ago for Best Engineered Album, Classical. He's an integral part of the music community, as evidenced by the huge turnout last night at Conor Byrne.
Stalk of the Town
Katelyn has, as usual, what feels like several dozen shows to attend this weekend. She'll be darting in and out of venues, doing the laundry she meant to do three weeks ago, and making a point to re-stock her sock supply at Target.
Can't Miss It: Thursday
BAND OF BROTHER AUTHORS: Elliott Bay Books is hosting a reading tonight by brother authors Leif and Lin Enger. According to the listing, "Both are home-state Minnesotans, both still live there, and both have the land of 10,000 lakes as the setting for their new books."
Can't Miss It: Tuesday
TEENY BOPPER EXPRESS: Disney's High School Musical opens at the Paramount tonight, so maybe steer clear of the teenagers downtown. If you have your own teenager, maybe it's a good night to set them free with their friends so they can go sing along and goo-goo-ga-ga over the cute boys and dreaminess of this sensational teenfest.
Feel Better, Madame K's!
We were getting ready to head down into Ballard last night to check out the Willie Nelson Tribute at Conor Byrne when we had the bright idea of taking our wife out for a dinner date on the way. The short and sweet note asking her out to the singularly lovely Madame K's put a smile on her down-in-the-dumps face almost as big as the one the Madame's orgasm dessert would soon put on ours.
Get Out Tonight: Carrie Clark, Nathan Wade and Conrad Ford at the Sunset
Tonight, she'll be filling the slot between Conrad Ford and Nathan Wade & The Dark Pioneers. If you already have other plans, that's okay, we won't judge you. But clear your calendar for next Friday, when Clark and company will join Wade and a ton of other great bands and singer/songwriters for a Tom Waits tribute at Conor Byrne.
We're a Total Failure, or How Guster Rocked Us
Well, shit. This weekend has been kind of a bust for shows Seattlest was supposed to see. Friday night, we were supposed to go see Hillstomp at Conor Byrne. We thought we had seen them, and we thought they rocked our socks. Apparently, we saw Miss Mamie Lavona the Exotic Mulatta and Her White Boy Band.
Stalk of the Town: September 21-23, 2007
Yes, it's the return of Stalk of the Town where Seattlest lets you in on our weekend plans. Got something going on we should know about? Drop a note in the comments.
Weekend Music
It's a weekend full of "fests" this time around. A veritable festival of...fests. Including EndFest with the Smashing Pumpkins in a parking lot somewhere, Oktoberfest in Fremont with lots of tasty local bands and Decibel all over the place. Here's a video for Decibel participant Kill Memory Crash:
Ali Marcus Is the Most Autobiographical Songwriter
Recorded by Bubba Jones (sounds like a made-up name to us), is all about road songs. The first one is called "The Most Autobiographical Song," and we're really glad she called it that. It's the kind of artful song title that helps save the song from sounding sort of "Hey, look at me and all I've experienced."
Aural Pleasures 12/27 - 1/1/2007
As it should be, it's quiet this week in Seattle, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to do -- especially the closer we get to New Year's Eve. So without further ado, Seattlest's belated gift to you -- some shows:
Get Out
MUSIC: Normally, we try to avoid El Corazon at all costs, but there’s an early show there today for a very good cause. During last week’s storm, Kate Fleming, a talented voice-over artist, died while attempting to save the audio gear in her home studio. Tonight’s show—featuring Speaker Speaker, Patience Please, Megasapian, In the Empty City, and more—is in Kate’s memory, with the money benefitting her family.
Aural Pleasures (11/21 - 11/27)
Not a huge week in music, but hey, it's a holiday. Stay home and eat! Then put your sweatpants on!
Get Your Drink On (Green Beer Edition)
Maybe Seattle doesn’t have a river to dye green just for the occasion, but there are still scads of St. Patrick’s Day activities here in the Emerald City. We suppose you could go to the Seattle Center for the big celebration there, but most people would rather be out drinking, so for your Irish pub-crawling pleasure (cover charges as noted):
