It's like the Friday after Thanksgiving for compost-lovers, as Seattle Public Utilities announces they are slashing the price of their compost bins (retail $100) to $25. The food waste and yard waste friendly bins are available for public purchase--Seattle residents only--from now until the end of September. And, they have $75 rain barrels too!

Last week we held our first guest blog post contest, and the winner was LaFemmeMonkita! We sent her to the new Croc to see Dr. Dog. We chose her post because...well, not that it was a crowded field the first time out, but what could be more Seattlest than posting about recycling...and its olfactory drawbacks? Not much! Hope you enjoy it.
The styrofoam ban date is approaching rapidly (Jan. 1), and it looks like it's really going to happen. Yesterday, the City of Seattle held an open house to help educate the restaurant industry about recyclable and compostable alternatives. Some of the options: "wheat-based clamshells" and "corn-based plastic cups." We noticed last week that Taco Del Mar has switched to recyclable plastic bags for take-out. The bags are translucent, with green ink and a large "recycle" symbol. Have you seen any other restaurants changing their materials yet?
Later this week, the Woodland Park Zoo kicks off their annual Fall Fecal Fest, during which you can procure (or enter to win) Zoo Doo, a delightful "blend of animal manures [elephants, hippos, zebras, giraffes, gazelles, oryx, ponies, and others] mixed with straw bedding, grass, leaves, and wood chips" from the zoo grounds. Apparently this shit's good for composting, fertilizing, and mulching. For more info on prices and pick up, call the (ugh) poop line at 206-625-POOP.
Maybe it's the recession like it was in the early 90s, but as a city, we're recycling more than ever before.
