The Husky NCAA Tournament train rolls on to round two. Those who picked Mississippi State as their upset special have literally had their brackets thrown to the wolves.

It’s the best thirty-six hours of the year, and for Husky fans the two most stressful will start around 2 p.m. when #4-seed UDub faces #13-seed Mississippi State down in Portland.

After seeing that the Huskies would be playing Mississippi State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, our first thought was, Surprise! Who knew Mississippi was still a state? We just assumed that after the Civil War and Trent Lott, America would just kind of let the lease run out.

The Washington State Cougars shut down one of the most potent offenses in the Tourney and the Big East Player of the Year, Luke Harangody, to advance to the Sweet 16. This is the first time in more than 65 years that Wazzu has won two games in the NCAA Tournament--last time, they made it to the national championship game. Coach Tony Bennett motivated his players with a little pre-game reminder of what happened last year, the result: the Cougs dominated the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame from start to finish on Saturday, winning 61-41.

Yesterday was a tale of two halves for the Washington State Cougars. Up against a tough No. 13 seed in Winthrop, the No. 4 seed Cougars were struggling at the half-way point tied 29-29. Then something clicked…Wazzu tightened up on defense, started taking quality shots and, 20 minutes later, the Cougs were moving on to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a 71-40 victory.

Tomorrow morning the No. 7 seed Gonzaga Bulldogs face the No. 10 seed Davidson Wildcats, game time is 9:25am on CBS. Gonzaga has an impressive resume of non-conference opponents, losing games to Wazzu, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Memphis (all by 10 points or less), and winning against Western Kentucky, Georgia, Saint Joseph's and UConn. What do these eight teams all have in common? They're all in the NCAA Tournament.

With none of the excitement of the NCAA Tournament, and probably half of the NIT Tournament, the Huskies will open play in the first round of the inaugural CBI Tournament tonight at Hec Ed.

The brackets are set for the men's NCAA Tournament--expect productivity at work to continue on a downward spiral as the week goes on. With the Huskies losing last night, their chance at the NIT are not looking good. Luckily there are two teams on the eastside of the mountains keeping hope alive for the State of Washington in the NCAA Tourney.

As we wrote earlier, the Huskies play Cal-Berkeley tonight in the first round of the Pac Ten Tournament. They'll be doing it without an injured Jon Brockman, seen by many as the team's best player. However, is he any good?

Today Seattlest welcomes our new sports correspondent to the fold. Drew Milam is a longtime Seattle resident who recently returned to the Emerald City after some time in the Bay Area, and claims to be super tight with fellow Santa Clara alum Steve Nash, Brandi Chastain and NFL referee Mike Carey. No word on if he got the gig because he is a Hillary supporter (pleasing Editor Kim) and a Garfield alum (pleasing Seattlest David).

Sports Illustrated is featuring the Huskies on the cover of their College Basketball preview-- well one of the five regional covers. The west coast edition features John Brockman and…really, wow, Ryan Appleby. Huh. Justin Dentmon must have had class or something.
