In the bus tunnel, at least, where there's smoke there's not always fire. In fact, there may not even be smoke, as KIRO reports: "Tunnel traffic was rerouted to surface streets and the entrances were closed, but no fire was found, said Linda Thielke of Metro Transit." Doesn't sound like commuters were told why their routes were disrupted, so if you're curious, now you know. A tipster tells us: "Our 550 was just exiting the tunnel around 7:30 a.m. when the dispatcher announced over the driver's headset that the tunnel was closing and all tunnel bus drivers need to take the surface streets. (Our bus was full of sleepy commuters and was pretty quiet so I totally eavesdropped). At this point, our driver made some comment along the lines of 'good thing we just missed it'."

Two vehicles, an SUV and a van, collided head-on on the Fremont Bridge this morning, blocking all lanes of traffic. KIRO 7 has their chopper in the air, and reports no word on when the bridge will reopen.

WSDOT has announced they will be re-opening I-5 this afternoon after flooding and debris forced the state to close the highway by Chehalis on Wednesday. The road crews are hard at work making sure the stretch is safe, and will be letting trucks and then regular traffic through at some point later today. That's great news for commerce in general, commuters, and all the weekend shows who were looking at cancellation. Won't it be nice when spring is here and the weather stops wreaking havoc on our city?

WSDOT says the water is still rising, though it's supposed to crest sometime today, and at this point estimates that I-5 will remain closed through the weekend. The flooding is also covering the train tracks, so Amtrak is not running between Seattle and Portland either. I-90 through Snoqualmie Pass remains closed, with no ETA on reopening. This photo gives an idea of the work remaining after the roads are cleared.

As we were delivering people to the airport on Monday morning--by the power of Subaru!--one of our passengers glanced up at the light rail line under construction and said, "This ought to be the last winter you have to shuttle people to the airport." Which we were pleased about. But then we got to thinking.

We don't know how to treat the old one properly. This morning, a man somehow got out onto the Monorail tracks, walked around, and then kicked back for a bit. Service was naturally halted until about 10:15 a.m., when he "surrendered" to the police who had been summoned. On the plus side, since you have 15 minutes until the police show up, this does give us an idea for a 10-minute Assassins action-tour.

Damn you, Cafe Stellina. In the year and a half the restaurant's been open in its new space (the Piston & Ring Building, the same as La Spiga, on 12th Ave just before Union), their business hours have thwarted our attempts to eat there on at least five occasions.
