Saturday we ran into Philip Dawdy sitting in front of Liberty. We were all blah blah affordable housing, blah blah CHHIP, but Dawdy was unimpressed. "What is that, 40 units?" he asked. "Why aren't you talking about what's happening with the Alaska Building?"

The advisory vote on the Viaduct is in and a crushing defeat has been issued to the “No and Hell No” campaign by write-in candidate “Hell No and No.” With strong turnouts in West Seattle, Magnolia and Capitol Hill, voters voiced their opinion on the mayor’s tunnel: as of 11:30pm, 69.88% responded in the negative to a tunnel-surface hybrid--a dramatic “Hell No” in our book. And voters rejected the elevated structure alternative with a less emphatic 55.48%-44.52%--a definite “No” by our reckoning, but definitely not a “Hell No.” Remember the scene in Dumb and Dumber when Dumb takes a one in a million shot to be good news? “So I have a chance!” We’re going to hear from Dumb regarding this 55%.

The city of Renton, which radiates out from the south end of Lake Washington east toward the Cascade foothills, is "eager to shed its blue-collar reputation," according to the Seattle Times.

We walked down to Occidental Square for our Monday lunch field trip and unfortnunately didn't see much. Supposedly the cutting has begun in Pioneer Square and trees are being felled, but the area lacked any chainsaw buzz or shouted "tim-berrrrrrr"s around noon. We didn't stick around to gawk, though, so maybe they were between trees. A nice little pile of fresh firewood was sitting around.

The man who brought the Space Needle to Seattle is resigning his position as City Councilman. Jim Compton, who was elected to the City Council in 1999 because he used to be on the TV, is stepping down to teach in Egypt and Romania. Or maybe after a heartwarming montage, it will be his students who teach him---how to love again.

After a failed run for governor last year (or perhaps he won, we're still going through old voting rolls) Ron Sims will be seeking his third term as King County Executive this fall.

Today Seattlest welcomes our new political correspondant to the fold. David Swidler is a longtime Seattle resident who recently returned to the Emerald City after some time in LA. He's worked for political consultants in Seattle previously so we're pretty sure he knows a few things.
