Though the now-infamous Jim Rose Circus got its start in Seattle in the early Nineties (Rose still owns a house south of the city in which he periodically resides), it's been quite a while since Rose brought his sideshow revival through town for a performance. The last record we could find of a show was from 1999. We asked Rose when he was last here to perform, who thought about it for a minute before replying, "Fuck, I don't remember, man."
SPELL OUT CHARITY: The Jewel Box Theater, located at Belltown mainstay the Rendezvous, will be hosting Buzzword, their first annual spelling bee for adults. Not an actual bee that spells, of course, but the good old-fashioned kind, and it's for charity! All proceeds will benefit Pike Place Market's Medical Clinic, Senior Center, Child Care & Preschool, and the Downtown Food Bank. They will be picking ten teams of three to compete for great prizes and the title of Killer Bee Spelling Champion, which will be decided in the final round on July 28. Who doesn't love to spell, and who doesn't love to give a little back? We know we do.
With today's release of her new album Circus, the narrative dictates that Britney is making a comeback. But with last weekend's MTV informercial and recent trainwreck live performances, we say she's still a hot tranny mess. Either way, it's just announced that Ms. Spears is heading to town next year: "Britney Spears will bring her highly anticipated The Circus Starring Britney Spears 2009 Tour to the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, WA on Thursday, April 9. The 27-city North American trek, her first arena tour in five years, follows hot on the heels of Spears’ long-awaited sixth studio album, Circus. Emmy Award-winning choreographer and director, Wade Robson, is helming the incredible tour production, which also features special guests The Pussycat Dolls." Squeeeeeee! Tickets go on sale this Saturday at 10 a.m. Prices start at $35.
Corteo is one of the most dynamic and creative artistic exploits of body movement that you can see in the United States. You can still buy tickets here and performances continue until May 4 at Marymoor Park in Redmond.
Cirque Du Soleil presents Corteo under the blue and yellow big top at Marymoor Park in Redmond beginning Thursday, April 24. Corteo has captivated fans on nearly every continent, so we asked Alison Crawford, Corteo senior artistic director, to share a few secrets about what makes the show tick.
Drop your cynicism at the door and get ready for childlike, wide-eyed delight. The Moisture Festival, now in its fifth year, has the same friendly feeling as the Oregon Country Fair. No surprise, since the festival's founders are long-time performers there. Each evening is a true variety show, with an eclectic mix of unpretentious performers who jump onto the stage and let their talent amaze us, rather than relying on lights and set. Cirque-du-fancy-pants-Soleil this is not. In many ways, it's better.
