Gallery: Legends Bruce Hornsby and Béla Fleck in One Night

             + 0 more

It was a gorgeous Saturday afternoon at the Chateau Ste Michelle. Everyone was smiling (due to the wine-driven buzz attendees were most likely donning) and delicious, if over-priced, food was served in abundance. We grabbed a fish and chips priced at a whopping $13, but you couldn't be unhappy or bitter for more than a minute with such beautiful surroundings not to mention the evenings events to come. more ›

Wine, Bela Fleck and Bruce Hornsby: the Perfect Saturday Combo

Wine, Bela Fleck and Bruce Hornsby: the Perfect Saturday Combo

Bela Fleck, American born, was named after Hungarian composer Béla Bartók, Austrian composer Anton Webern and Czech composer Leoš Janáček. You could literally say he was born into music. He was drawn toward the banjo, the instrument for which he is most well-known, after hearing Earl Scruggs picking away. He formed Bela Fleck and the Flecktones with Wooten twenty three years ago and they haven't slowed down a bit. As with any group playing for over two decades, members have moved in and out of the project. However, tonight we get a taste of nostalgia: Bela will be playing with his original Flecktones once again at Chateau Ste Michelle in Woodinville, WA. Don't forget your chairs and/or blankets unless you want to shell out the extra bucks for reserved seating. more ›

Wineries Announce Summer Concert Series

Earlier this week, Maryhill Winery (located in Goldendale, WA, approximately 90 minutes east of Portland) announced their summer concert series, featuring the Counting Crows, Jackson Browne, and John Legend with India.Arie. Not to be outdone, Chateau Ste. Michelle announced their own concert series closer to home. They'll see your Jackson Browne and John Legend/Indie.Arie--they've got 'em on the schedule too--and raise you Tears for Fears, Bonnie Raitt, Pink Martini, Elvis Costello, and Diana Krall (on separate August weekends, for whatever reason). Tickets for all shows at both wineries go on sale this Saturday, April 25th. more ›

Stalk Of The Town

It's been a long time since Kim had a tourist to show around, so she's looking forward to giving her father a stellar tour of Seattle and its environs. On the agenda: Chateau Ste. Michelle, Bainbridge Island, the Fremont troll, and plenty of great food--finally an excuse to go to the Kingfish! Before pops arrives, she'll kick the weekend off right, with Sera Cahoone and Zoe Muth tonight at the Tractor. more ›

Contrary to Popular Opinion, We Are Not Really "World Class" This Year

Contrary to Popular Opinion, We Are Not Really "World Class" This Year

Ah yes, we say, full of ignorant bravado, our wines are the best there is. World class, to coin a phrase. Well, reality check, folks: not this year. Over 9,000 wines from around the world were entered in the most prestigious competition of them all, the Decanter World Wine Awards, and the judges (also from around the world) narrowed them down by region, by grape variety and by price. Of the top two dozen, not a one from the United States. The winners: 6 each from South Africa, and France, 5 from Australia, 3 from Spain, 2 each from Italy, Portugal and Argentina, and one for Germany: the world's best pinot noir. Seriously. more ›

'70S NOSTALGIA: Called "the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies” by the Rolling Stones, the not oft-toured band, Steely Dan, makes an appearance at the Chateau Ste. Michelle out in Woodinville. Drive out to the beautiful winery, have a glass, and remember the days in which people stood in line at the gas stations and screamed at each other, rather than simply paying through the nose for a full tank. more ›

WHAT A WICKED GAME YOU PLAY: There's some pretty good national names hitting town tonight. But, since Emmylou Harris is sold out at the Zoo, perhaps you'll enjoy the warbling sounds of Chris Isaak at the Chateau Ste. Michelle winery. Tickets for that are still on sale. more ›

HIPPIES UNITE: Innovative guitarist/singer/songwriter Keller Williams is a mainstay on the jamfolk scene and, much like Yonder Mountain Stringband (also on the bill tonight), is responsible for inspiring throngs of hippies to bounce and twirl. We've never caught him live, but we understand he puts on quite the show. He'll be at Marymoor tonight, blowing some minds. more ›

Weekend Music

While this weekend is mostly dominated by all that Sub Pop hooha (and once again, kids, 520's closed, so take alternate routes), there's still a few shows besides those that Katelyn already mentioned. more ›

Best Oysters, Best Wines

Best Oysters, Best Wines

Puget Sound is home to some of the world's best oyster beds, thanks to cold, clean water and nutrient-rich runoff from the Cascades and the Olympics. Ya got your Kumamotos, your Pacifics, your Olympias, your Virginicas. Yup, Virginicas, "east coast" oysters whose seed was brought to Washington by transcontinental train nearly a century ago, grown on the banks of Totten Inlet. And, get this: in a blind tasting last week, sponsored by the East Coast Shellfish Growers Association, those "west coast" Virginicas were judged number one. "Stunning" said Rowan Jacobsen, author of The Geography of Oysters. Local grower Bill Taylor, president of Taylor Shellfish Farms, was humble: "A thrill to have our oysters appreciated by such an esteemed panel." more ›
