Gallery: Capitol Hill Block Party - Sunday

             + 8 more

You would think the Sunday lineup for a three-day festival would be a little lacking. It's the wind-down day with fewer big names and more local, lesser-known/ lesser-loved bands. But fortunately, the Capitol Hill Block Party basically blew our minds and railed against the Sunday fest-lag. more ›

Gallery: Cave Singers, Moondoggies and Lovesick Empire

             + 3 more

What better way to spend your night than with good company and great music. That's how we spent our friday night at the Showbox. The lineup couldn't have been better with a brand-spanking new band Lovesick Empire, the Moondoggies, and the Cave Singers rounding out the evening. We weren't sure what to think of Lovesick Empire. There was basically zero web-presence representing the band and had no clue what to expect. The only evidence that they even existed before the show was an interview over at Seattle Show Gal. We were happily surprised by what we heard especially from the lead singer as she really put her soul into the music as you can see in the gallery shots below. It was a combination of blues and rock with a little pop thrown in for good measure. We especially loved their play on "Indian Summer" by Beat Happening also covered recently by Ben Gibbard (though we may be wrong, it sounded very similar with identical lyrics thrown in occasionally). If you have the chance to check them out, we recommend it. We're hoping to nab their EP and have a review up soon. Relive, in reality or vicariously, through the photos below. It was an incredible show. You can also check out even more shots at the flickr collection. more ›

Moondoggies and Cave Singers Stomp the Floor at Showbox Tonight

Moondoggies and Cave Singers Stomp the Floor at Showbox Tonight

There seems to be a new grassroots movement lately toward, well... bluegrass/newgrass rock music. Now I'm sure you're thinking, as were we, that bluegrass is for your dad or grandpa. Honestly about six months ago we would have agreed with you wholeheartedly. No matter how many records people would play for us, we simply weren't convinced. It just wasn't relateable... at the time. Flash forward to the present and we find ourselves in love with talented bluegrass-style groups like the Maldives, Moondoggies, Cave Singers, Trampled by Turtles, Blitzen Trapper, and even arguably The Builders and the Butchers and Decemberists. more ›

Seattle's Top Shows of November

Seattle's Top Shows of November

Let's be honest: November is a good month for the beginnings of shitty weather and holiday stress. We have few memories of this month yielding much in the way of excellent shows or substantial numbers of bands coming through our fair city. However, this year around, it's clear that the rock gods are on out side: November closely mirrors October in terms of a huge dose of amazing bands. Let's salute the coming dark months together with some of the month's most anticipated shows. more ›

New State Lottery Ad, Brand New Grizzly Bear Song

New State Lottery Ad, Brand New Grizzly Bear Song

We’ve got mixed feelings about the new ad from Washington’s Lottery that features a brand new song from Grizzly Bear. While we enjoy the tune and fanciful visuals that are thematically almost reminiscent of this recent, strangely psychedelic cat food commercial, we’ve got some questions about the source of the material. We were hoping that like the last great WA Lottery commercial featuring The Cave Singer’s “The Seeds of Night”, more of these state-funded ads would showcase the treasure that is our local state talent. How about it WA Lottery, by keeping it local, “whose world could you change?” more ›

Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition Dec 11-13

Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition Dec 11-13

DICK DALE: 72 years old and still going strong, Dick Dale continues to ride the wave that made him a star. Arguable inventor of the classic surf sound, Dale was also a collaborator with Leo Fender, pushing guitar amps out of their clean and quiet beginnings up into 11. He is justifiably a legend. A very loud legend. more ›

Get Out Tonight: Department of Eagles at Neumo's

In Ear Park is the latest release from Rossen and Nicolaus, and we kindly direct you to the La Blogotheque Take-Away Show above, featuring the duo wandering around NYC's Chinatown while playing a selection of tunes, including the lovely love song "No One Does It Like You." The moody, harmony-heavy album's been getting good reviews, with the New York Times praising its "sparse acoustic moments and lavishly layered pop--gorgeous and suffused with mystery," while Pitchfork gave it an 8.3. Local neo-Appalachians the Cave Singers open. more ›

Seattlest Picks for the Capitol Hill Block Party

Seattlest Picks for the Capitol Hill Block Party

Friday: Catch Common Market (4:30) and U.S.E. (5:30) at the main stage, then skip over to King Cobra for the second half of Truckasaurus (6:00). Take a dinner break (may we suggest eating something protein-heavy?), then get yerself to Neumo's for Thee Emergency at 7:45. After that, we suggest Das Llamas (it's their last set...THEIR LAST ONE!) at 9:45 at the Cha Cha. To round out the night, buy yourself a fancy rum drink at Havana and party until the wee hours with DJ Curtis. more ›

Get Out Thursday: Casey Neill at the Sunset

Casey Neill is one of our personal favorites from that other Northwest city with the other great music scene. He and his Norway Rats play hard-drinking folk-rock ala the Dylan meets the Pogues, meets early R.E.M, and they'll be joining some great Seattleites, Kasey Anderson and the Crying Shame's Arlan and Dylan, at the Sunset this Thursday. more ›

Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, June 6-8

STEP UP YOUR BRUNCH GAME: Brunch for Seattlest usually means stumbling to the closest eggs-and-bacon joint, slamming some coffee, and thanking God we didn't have to put on real clothes for the occasion. But we will make an exception and actually dress up (ish) for a fancy weekend brunch, now offered at the Saint, if only for the opportunity to taste Tecate-marinated Carne con Huevos (yum) and sip on a house mimosa. The Saint's from the classy people at Havana, so we're sure brunch here will wake you up and calm you down in style. more ›

An Invitation from the Cave Singers

In January of this year, the Weekly's Brian J. Barr described local trio the Cave Singers as "an updated version of the Anthology of American Folk Music. Not the graduate-student, learned interpretations of folk music circa 1962, but folk music approached by way of punk rock. It's sparse, melodic, and simultaneously creepy and alluring, like the widow mourning graveside in Johnny Cash's 'Long Black Veil'." That was enough to get Matador Records interested, who signed the band in May and released their debut album Invitation Songs last month. more ›

KEXP Barbecue in Brief

Though Seattlest would love nothing more than to give you a proper review of the KEXP barbecue, we've come to the stinging conclusion that it's simply not in the cards. We just got a work deadline thrown at us like a ton of cliches and this is the best we can do for you right now. more ›

Last Chance to Win Saturday Block Party Tix

The above vid is a live performance of "Our Bovine Public," the barrelling leadoff track from The Cribs' latest release, Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever.
