Along with all the hiphop this weekend and the hella rad Subtle laser show tonight, there's a few more music events of note. First up, tonight State Bird plays an early show (8 p.m.) at the Q Cafe in Ballard. How both the venue and this great group of Ohio tribal-folksters have been under our radar is beyond us.

Last night at the Crocodile was one of those evenings you stumble on where things just keep getting better and better. We went down to see headliners Sea Wolf [MySpace] after hearing them do an in-studio bit at KEXP (not posted yet). About two songs in, the indie-folk melodies and lead singer's baritone duets with cello swept us and Shelves of Vinyl off our feet.

Through Sunday, May 6; Tickets $24

On Friday, December 29th at 10am, KEXP will begin counting down the top 90.3 albums of 2006 (does that mean 90 good albums plus one only a third of which is any good? We don't know). In the meantime, until December 26th you and everyone you know can vote for your own top five albums of the year.

Dear Dears, is it something we said? Did we not return your phone calls? Did we spill a drink on your favorite shoes? Because we really don't understand why you would play a set without acknowledging your audience unless we had personally offended you in some way.

Well, that was weird. We like the Cat Power, don't get us wrong. But, in retrospect, we would have skipped Chan Marshall's set at the Showbox last night. We wish she had. It all started with her complaining about wearing size 26 pants when she's really a 28. "I fucked up," she said, dryly. (We thought that was banter but she kept hitching her pants up all set long, even unzipping them onstage, a move some heartily applauded. She was dressed all in black, it turned out.)

Music: Cat Power, Chan (short for Charlyn) Marshall, brings her insanity-influenced act to our frozen burg. Right now she's walking around town, melting the ice with that impish smile of hers.

Here's to the ice melting away because there are some good shows this week.

If you've been putting it off the entire Holiday weekend, now is officially your last chance to enter to win a chance to see Cat Power. Tonight's the oh-so-private Rhapsody/Rolling Stone recording session and tomorrow's her performance at the Showbox.

Just your friendly reminder that you've only got two more days to try your luck at winning a chance to see Cat Power. We're giving away tix to her her upcoming concert at the Showbox next Tuesday night, as well as a pair of seats to a very intimate recording session at an as-yet-undisclosed downtown location held by Rhapsody and Rolling Stone on Monday night (~5pm).

Sure, Chan Marshall of Cat Power is not a mess like she once was. She's cleaned up her act, stopped trying to drink herself to death, and can actually make it through an entire set without crying. Plus, for her latest album she teamed up with a great collective of musicians, the Memphis Rhythm Band, who do an awesome job bluesing up her delicate sound. Still, even with those changes, given what we've seen of Chan's onstage antics during her recent tour---spontaneous jigging, shadowboxing, chicken-dancing, and forgetting band members' names---one thing remains clear: Bitch is crazy.

We were collecting ourselves this morning, sipping on a cup of coffee on the back porch and checking in with the day's internets edition. Standard stuff except for the good weather. Oh, here's an email from Matador Records, let's see who's touring through. Cat Power - No Seattle date. Then there's a band we don't know. And another one. Then there's a band we don't care about. Then there's Mogwai - Already on our calendar. New Pornographers...Seattle....Aug 12....Gasworks Park! Gasworks Park! Then it hit us like a length of 2x4 to the small of the back- That show's not happening. That sounds like Summer Nights. We know it's not happening. If you read this site you know it's not happening. If you're a member of a Wallingford neighborhood group you're damn sure it's not happening because you're a miserable piece of shit who hates music and fun and light and cares only about defending your parking spot tooth and nail and then scurrying back under your rock. If you're Matador Records, though, you either haven't been informed or you're not staying on top of your tour schedules. And once again, to the Friends of Gasworks Park and all their kind who decided that we wouldn't be walking over to Gasworks and getting our geek rock on with the New Pornographers this August, fuck you.

Oh how the tides will change…

Would you believe us, if we told you the little girl who gave Ben Seaver his first kiss on the lovable TV show “Growing Pains,” has an album on the Easy Street and Sonic Boom Top-Seller lists?

Over at the mass-market music stores like Sam Goody and FYE, the “Best-Seller” lists are occupied by those finger-puppets artists you’d expect to hear on KISS 106.1 or KUBE 93 (i.e. Black-Eyed Peas, Kelly Clarkson, Jamie Foxx).
