Fuck the '80s. Seriously, one more Mo Rocca VH1 show, one more special dance night, one more themed party, one more fashion comeback from anything hailing from the years between 1980 and 1989, and we're going to lose it. We were there; it sucked. That said, if you're going to throw a play in the basement of La Spiga/Boom Noodle that has an affiliation to the 1980s, you can do worse than to bookend it......

If you walk up or down Pine Street toward downtown, you may have seen a group of people intently watching the dog run over I-5 just to the west of Minor Ave. If you slowed your gait and took a gander yourself, you would have had the shock we did last night of seeing a bunch of goats munching away at the hillside. It was strange enough that we stopped our run to the bus......

Yesterday morning we were biking up to Volunteer Park on sunny 14th Avenue when we saw what seemed like the aftermath of a huge accident: three tow trucks busy with cars, a motorcycle cop, cops in new, unmarked muscle cars, cops in new, marked muscle cars. A little farther down the street, we ran across a Cascade Bicycle Club tent, and our foggy memory kicked in. Ah, Car Free Day. Each block of 14th had......

We're stealing this real estate post almost directly from CHS, who discovered Redfin's cool graphs before we did. But we'll refine the focus to condos to avoid outright plagiarism. Redfin's numbers show that since October '06, the number of Capitol Hill condos on the market has ballooned from just over 100 to just under 250 currently. Meanwhile, the average list price has hovered around $475/sq. ft., while actual sales price has declined significantly since last......

Opening night crowd at this splendid, brand-new Italian eatery is conservatively dressed, considering the Capitol Hill location. One customer in a tank top, one server with a piercing and tats, but mostly it's long-sleeved shirts of muted stripes. The chef, Justin Niedermeyer, wears a vest. The barman, Gavin Morris, serves Seattlest opening night's first negroni. Sometime later, he makes another negroni, but we spot maitre d' Matthew Lawrence taking it back to the kitchen. No,......

"all u need" courtesy of Seattlest Flickr photographer shapefarm My Ballard brought the best news we read all Monday, reporting that Cuban sandwich savior Paseo, is opening another location today. Back in February (brrr!), we reported on the venerable Capitol Hill institution, B&O Espresso, being forced out of its longtime location at the corner of Belmont & Olive because the property owners had plans for a multi-story apartment building there. This weekend we stopped in and saw the B&O's owner Majid behind the pastry case, and asked how things were going. Turns out that he's still planning on moving up to Broadway to take over......

We've been doing our fair share of gushing over the new H&M store, but there's fashion doings to report closer to home (i.e., Capitol Hill), too. Under4Men is the name of the new men's underwear store that's opened up in the Loveless building at the north end of Broadway (on Broadway East, as a matter of geographic fact). We were walking by so we popped in to confirm that it is just the kind of......

Not to belabor this story, but we think the issue of the rights of bicycle riders to the road is an important one. We ride on the city streets every day and, though some commenters on our post about changes we'd like to see made to Critical Mass in Seattle think that every driver goes out of his or her way to be respectful to us, we know it's not true. Seattle still has a......

"There Goes the Neighborhood" by Seattlest Flickr photog goldlionpics The Big Blog gleefully reports there will FINALLY be a World Series in Seattle. The Gay Softball World Series will be hosted on several Seattle fields in August. Central District News brings their regular and always interesting reads, the CD Police Scanner, where it was a boring Monday--fights and narcotics activities--and a development update about where the next condo is going in the CD. We are......

Today, the I Saw U and Missed Connections sections are chockablock with the requisite ads from Capitol Hill Block Party attendees looking for that one girl they saw that one time at that band's set. So if you have bleached blonde hair, a cute tattoo, or were wearing a pretty dress this weekend, your suitor awaits. On the other hand, if you are Heather Tanner, somebody found your wallet and would like to return it......

For the record, this Seattlest is a daily bike commuter who knows and appreciates the rights and responsibilities of biking in an urban environment. We also have a friend who was beaten by cops a couple years ago during a Critical Mass demonstration. While this post isn’t specifically about Friday’s incident at Seattle's Critical Mass on Capitol Hill, the event (and one just as scary in New York City) moved us to share these......

"Main Stage Dusk," one of several stitched panoramas by Seattlest Flickr pool member Andrew G Davis. It'd be easy to bitch and complain about certain aspects of the Capitol Hill Block Party. Sure, it attracts a bevy of tools who by the end of the night are barely-standing drunken douchebags. And yes, you have to put up with the poorly-scripted political pablum in between acts. Plus, in the aftermath, there's all that garbage. But......

The Stranger's indefatigable Jonah Spangenthal-Lee gets a wonderful quote from the driver of the Subaru who ran into some (and over one) bicyclists in last Friday night's Critical Mass confrontation on Aloha on Capitol Hill: “I sympathize with [cyclists'] cause. I ride bikes too. I’m a liberal hippie democrat” [...] “I’m gay, the person with me was a lesbian and we were a attacked by eco-terrorists. It’s the most Seattle thing that could have happened."......

Last night, as we were making some Niman Ranch sausage, some Critical Mass bicyclists were almost turned into sausage in the street outside. (We mention the kind of sausage because had it been cut-rate, we might have poked our heads out to take a look, but it wasn't and we were hungry.) At around 7:00 p.m., about 100 Critical Mass bikers were riding down Aloha on Capitol Hill, blocking traffic as usual. One driver didn't......

We have no idea why there isn't an exclamation mark after new restaurant Olivar's name. It just seems natural. But there isn't, even though they must be excited to be open. We didn't go to the grand opening last night, but we could smell the kitchen and it made us very hungry. They're in Capitol Hill's Loveless building, at 806 East Roy Street, just across the street from the Harvard Exit theater. We just walked......

By now, you’ve most likely realized that Seattlest loves a little bit of the strange in our daily lives. Between all the off-beat circuses, live movies, and pillow fights, our entertainment tastes obviously run a little bit off center. It shouldn’t come as a surprise then that spending a day shooting nine holes of golf around Capitol Hill, in costume, at the bi-annual Seattle Urban Golf was right up our alley. At first glance, nine......

We hear the power's out on 15th Ave this morning. Seattle City Light estimates it'll be back up by noon; they found a tree growing into a powerline. (That seems like a pretty fast-growing tree, to us, but we're not experts.) The outage area is from E Roy to E Pine, and from Summit to 29th, affecting about 4,000 people. We had thought the power outage might be storm-related, and this whole "tree, growing" angle......

Seattle Pridefest '07 photo courtesy of Flickr contributor Andrew G. Davis It's finally here: that weekend when we all get to crawl out of our closets (or just emerge from our nesty living rooms) and strut down the street in leathers and feathers. God must not hate the gays that much, because she's blessed us with a weekend forecast that only encourages leather thongs and tight tanks (81 today, 88 tomorrow, 89 Sunday). There......

FREE BOOTY: Scion is desperate to be cool, and the latest result of that pathological drive is a CD sampler of work from IHEARTCOMIX, the LA-based label/lifestyle company. The CD is available at Scion dealerships, but the real cool news is that IHEARTCOMIX is sending dj Franki Chan (with Radiocl*t and Drop the Lime) on a limited and exclusive tour to support the release that comes to the War Room tonight. Seattlest has lived in eight cities across the country, and we have to be honest. We've lived in Seattle longer than we have anywhere else because we love it here. It's clean, it's culturally vibrant, it's full of extraordinary natural beauty, it's safe. But, we've never been able to reckon with the fact that it's just so damned wealthy and white. Much as we like to think of ourselves as forward-thinking, inclusive citizens, we......

Listening to KEXP the past few mornings, we heard an ad for 12th Ave's Trace Lofts that caught our attention, and not in a good way. Apparently, one of the establishments going into the condos' Trace North building is a Mexican restaurant. Named Barrio. Take it away, press release: Barrio, pronounced "bä'rē-ō'," takes its name from the Spanish word for "neighborhood," a term generally used to describe a cohesive place. The food will take......
