R.I.P. Bailey/Coy

We're terribly sad to relay that the much-loved Capitol Hill bookstore, Bailey/Coy, will be closing its doors at the end of November after 26 years of service, announced owner Michael Wells yesterday.

We've Got Mad Hops, Yo

Thankfully on Monday we had an opportunity to purge our system at Latona Pub. They were the tapping the Fremont Brewing Company’s Universale Pale. It felt great to support a local brewery and the event got us excited about our hop harvest. We’re hoping we have enough homegrown hops and coriander to brew a witbier. Growing hops has been a relatively easy process. If you’re interested in having your own hops next year ask your local homebrew supply store about rhizome availability for planting in spring.

Order Up a Mess of Pulled Pork at Gert's BBQ

We were standing at the corner of 15th and East Pine the other night when we sniffed barbecue. We remembered suddenly that CHS had mentioned something about Gert's BBQ moving into the neighborhood--and there they were, in the parking lot across from Anchovies & Olives.

Yesterday afternoon we got a last-minute invitation to captothehill's remembrance of the 500 block of East Pine, a $10,000 party the bloggers won back in July.

COOLEST PARTY IN TOWN: Tonight's the night when Cap to the Hill throws their $10K party in the parking lot of Havana. To back up and explain, Creature, a Capitol Hill ad agency, had a contest last month to find someone who could throw a really awesome, $10K party to produce material for a JanSport campaign. Cap to the Hill won, and now they're having a party celebrating the old Pine St. corridor, when the Bus Stop, Bimbo's, and the Cha Cha were all destinations. That said, the party's not open to the public, just to 400 or so of Cap to the Hill's closest friends, so you can either beg them, or turn up and hope someone's got a +1 for you.

Happy Beer Hour, Part Four

Pillager's Pub, Greenwood (Tuesday, 50-percent-off "house" growler fills; Mon-Sun, $1 off pints) Stagger in from 87th & Greenwood to taste Baron & Three Skulls beers paired side by side with a few guest faves. The draft list is managed by former Duck Island'er Jeremiah Harrison and features--on top of beers and cider--authentic mead. Pull up a battered stool, chew up a $1 pretzel, or play a game of pool--just watch your arse, sharks abound.

ARBITRARY ART: Vital 5's newest Arbitrary Art Grant happening is going down tonight. The guerrilla event is taking over part of the parking lot on the 500 block of East Pine Street (near the intersection with Summit Avenue)--the outline of an art gallery's walls will be on the ground. The trick here is to get people to show up with a work of art tied around their neck; the people stand on the lines, forming the walls of the gallery and displaying the art. One gets the $500 grant. Just don't be late. 6-7 p.m. // 500 Block, East Pine Street // free to gawk, may pay to participate!

Office Nomads, the Capitol Hill rent-an-office-life purveyor, has gotten serious about getting looky-loos over the threshold. They're offering Pink Slip Scholarships for anyone recently laid off who has realized their basement office is sad and lonely, and a new Basic membership level for anyone who needs a few days a month to just get things done. There are two of the scholarships per month, which begin with a whole month free, and the Basic nets you three days for $50, plus drop-ins for $20. That sounds perfect for the coffee shop nomad who needs a few guaranteed "office" days for conference calls without the steamer wand snorkeling in the background.

Can't Miss It: Monday

PIZZA, COMEDY, AND KIDDOS: This month's Pagliacci comedy night is headlined by Derek Sheen, known for his heavy metal, pop culture, sci-fi, and comic book humor. Hellooooo, nerds! While usual host PRoK's Emmett Montgomery is enjoying his honeymoon, Paul Merrill takes over MC duties, and joining Paul on stage are his two sons Charlie (3) and James (9). Because nothing says comedy like some dude's kids. 8 p.m. // Broadway Pagliacci Pizza // 426 Broadway Ave E // free

Fans of thoughtful, melodic and occasionally melodramatic rock, fear not. There is a place for you at Capitol Hill Block Party as well! With the third and final part of our "Better Know a CHBP Band" series, we present Hey Marseilles, Fences, and The Lonely Forest. The last three bands of our local spotlight are among some of your best bets for heartfelt tunes that may or may not tug at your heartstrings. Regardless of what musical choices you make on the ground, with 45 acts to choose from, you’re bound to find something that will please your ears.

If we've learned one thing about our past experiences at Capitol Hill Block Parties, it is that the bands that endear themselves to the gathered masses the most are ones that get the Partyers to move. (Flashback to Girl Talk's 2008 CHBP performance.) Next up in our "Better Know a CHBP Band" series, we present New Faces and The Pica Beats. Though there are major differences between the tempos these bands employ, expect dominant rhythms, and considerable movement around both sets.

While we are no doubt excited for the biggest draws of the CHBP, we’re most excited to see some of our local favorites. Over the coming day and a half, we’ll post some words we’ve exchanged with the bands to ensure you get to know them all just a little bit better before you are faced with making choices about the three stages when you’re on the ground. First up, we present Seattlest’s favorite purveyors of rich Americana melodies, The Maldives and The Moondoggies.

Going into Cafe Stellina's old digs on 12th next to La Spiga, Plum, a 100% vegan and organic restaurant, is all set to open tomorrow--this time, for realz. That will assuredly be helpful to any sickly vegans hitting up the Capitol Hill Block Party needing their fix of seitan, tempeh, and quinoa. Plum is the latest venture from Makini Howell of 15th Ave mainstay Hillside Quickie, and plans to be open 7 days a week, starting at 8 a.m. We can't say we'll be stopping by for the food, but the fact that they have a full bar and weekday happy hour is enticing. (Plum's happy hour is 5-7 p.m., with a "coffee happy hour" from 3-5 p.m.) Either the cilantro lime mojito (white rum and chili liquor muddled with fresh cilantro and lime) or the cucumber dill mojito (lemon vodka muddled with fresh cucumbers and dill) sound refreshing for the hot week to come.

The intern over on the Slog has put together the stats on our brutal week of murders. There have only been eleven murders in Seattle this year--which is the good news; the bad news is, a quarter of 'em happened this week.

Ballet Adds Banh Mi Menu

If Baguette Box is a little too gourmet for your budget, say hello to banh mi at Ballet. The sandwiches arrived a while ago, actually, but the menu took a while to show up. Ballet is a Vietnamese-fusion joint off Broadway on Pike Street on Capitol Hill. People who live and work in the Pike-Pine corridor use it like a cafeteria (the worn interior and cheap prices complete the effect).

Oh hi, what's that? We can't hear you over all the drinks and merriment going on at the Lookout (757 Bellevue Ave E) right now. Join us for Seattlest Happy Hour on the patio till 8 p.m. with $4 wells, $3 microbrews, and $4 wine. It's too nice of a day to not be drinking outdoors!

We departed Seattlest world headquarters at 12th and John Street at 11:49 and landed at SeaTac at 12:45. Our trip included a ride on the #10 bus to Westlake, a light rail ride from Westlake Center to Tukwila, and a shuttle bus from the Tukwila station to the airport. For speedphiles, the actual train trip ride from Westlake to Tukwila was 34 minutes. It was also 34 minutes last Friday. It will probably be 34 minutes next week.

Can't Miss It: Tuesday

LOVE SEATTLEST? Of course you do! Why else would you be reading this? And if you love Seattlest, you must love liquor and Seattlest writers, and you should therefore attend Seattlest Happy Hour at The Lookout. We'll brook no counterarguments. 5-8 p.m. // The Lookout // 757 Bellevue Ave. E // drink specials: $4 wells, $3 microbrews, and $4 wine

Just a reminder that tomorrow is the latest installation of Seattlest Happy Hour. From 5-8 p.m. we'll be taking in a lovely summer Tuesday on The Lookout's outdoor patio while enjoying their happy hour specials: $4 wells, $3 microbrews, and $4 wine. Join us at the intersection of Bellevue, Bellevue, and Bellevue, but leave your guns at home (or at least don't leave them in the bathroom). Added bonus: the day after tomorrow happens to be our birthday, so we expect all of you to be on hand to buy us drinks. AS GOD INTENDED. See you tomorrow!

Starbucks Strips Down, Take 2

Turns out the stripped-down, de-logo-fied Starbucks up on 15th isn't quite the oh-so-original take on a neighborhood cafe that Starbucks intended. Linda Derschang, the owner of Smith, right next door, has sent an enraged letter over to the Stranger.

Will 12th Avenue Streetcar Have You Doing Loops?

One thing the loop does is remove the need for decision about 12th or Broadway, which, it being Seattle, could keep us at the consensus table for the next quarter of a century. Also, as we understand it, it takes up less space to run the streetcar one way down a street, and it pencils out (construction-wise) as cheaper to do.

According to the , the 15th Avenue Starbucks, up on Capitol Hill, is part of an ambitious makeover project the company's exploring that will leave the store stripped of the Starbucks name altogether (if you read CHS, you heard about the makeover in the comments a month ago). The store will be renamed for the neighborhood, lose the traditional Starbucks branding, and will even start serving wine and beer. The remodeled store will be re-opening next week.

Once again, the third week of the month is a-comin', and that means Seattlest Happy Hour. Next Tuesday (the 21st) from 5-8 p.m. we'll be at The Lookout for their sweet outdoor patio. Join us at the erstwhile Artemis at Bellevue, Bellevue, and Bellevue with the following happy hour specials (4-7 p.m.): $4 wells, $3 Microbrews, and $4 wine. There's also food on the menu, and trust us when we say that it's okay to be tempted by the white wine spritzer. See you next Tuesday! (Raj, this means you.)

About 1 p.m. this afternoon, a Bronco XLT swerved out of control, clipped a few cars, and collided with Twice Sold Tales, at East Denny Way on Capitol Hill. CHS says the driver got out and headed up Denny on foot towards Broadway. Then at 5:30 p.m., MyBallard reports, a driver of a Bronco also lost control, smashed into a few cars, and ran into the bike shop at 56th Street and 24th Avenue. As we always remind you, two is a trend. If you see a Bronco, run like hell.

Seattle, Home of World-Changing NIMBY Graffiti Artists

"Queers Against Gentrification," spotted by the lovely and talented Katelyn Hackett on Capitol Hill "right across from the light rail construction site, John and...10th, I guess." ACT UP! indeed.

Cap. Hill Purse Thief Cuts Victim, Friends Don't Pick Up

Shortly after 2 a.m. this morning, a 20-year-old British woman, steps away from her apartment, noticed a man had been following her. At the corner of 10th Avenue East and East Highland Drive, the attacker pulled a knife and lunged for her purse, cutting both the purse strap and the woman's wrist. Moments later, the victim flagged down a nearby police car, alerting them of the robbery and the fleeing assailant. A police pursuit ensued, although it ended without finding the suspect.

Old School Frozen Custard Cuts Hot Dogs, Chili On July 1

Old School Frozen Custard, the new shop that just opened across the parking lot from Chop Suey, is already making adjustments to their menu. According to a sign in their window, they'll be discontinuing the chili and hot dogs on July 1, leaving them to focus strictly on the custard. We'd been curious about the dogs since they opened and had a couple for lunch. While tasty (and very filling), they certainly weren't a menu option we'll miss when gone. We've got Shorty's for hot dogs. Old School's making the right choice by focusing on the custard that is their namesake (and with Molly Moon's right around the corner, they don't need to waste time on culinary distractions).
